Title: Union Pacific Heritage Series
Post by: Mike_AA9ZY on January 25, 2008, 11:06:35 AM
I just got my latest issue of CTT and I noticed the WBB ad on the back cover.

The UP heritage engines look pretty cool.

Are these engines available yet and what is the price on them? When will you be posting pictures in the gallery?

Sexy paint jobs!

I'm looking to buy the MKT/KATY version.  I have the Williams "2500" type cars in Texas Special for my Lionel 2245 F3 units.  Those cars would be great with that UP unit!

Yup. I'm also a volunteer examiner. It's amazing the number of hams that are also model railroaders. Mr. Bachmann, I'm still waiting for pictures of those heritage units.

Hey Mr. Bach Man,

When are we going to see pictures of the Heritage units? I guess I'm anxious to see the actual paint jobs.

I can't wait! ;D

Was it my imagination, or did you folks improve the paint jobs on those F3 and GP38 engines on the back cover of the latest CTT?

The paint jobs have always been great, but the photography was never good enough to show them off!

Once there, click on "General Public", "History and Photos", and "Our Heritage".

For a UP 8309 prototype photo:

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=146298 (http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=146298)

All 7 locos are EMD SD70ACe units.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMD_SD70M (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMD_SD70M)

I'm guessing that the WBB 3 rail O-gauge Heritage models will use the "SD90 Scale Diesel" molds as seen in the Williams "Winter 2004-2005 Contemporary Line" fold up poster catalog.  (Wow... almost 18" long, yet still navigates O-31 curves !.... Thats 14.25" radius, folks.  Can you say "Overhang"?)

I'm not an EMD specialist, but there may not be too many visual differences between the two prototypes (SD90 and SD70ACe) ....

Great looking paint schemes, though.... they should sell a ton of 'em.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Joe Satnik

The units are based on the SD90 shell are are cataloged as Heritage Units, not as SD70ACE Heritage Units.
The short hood is not correct for the Heritage Units

The major differences (spotting features) are as follows;

The SD90 rear hood is squared off. The SD70 has the standard EMD wedge.
Both model use a flush level dynamic brake fan in the rear.

The SD90 use three radiator fans. The SD70 uses two fans.
Ditto on the radiator sections.

Reference is Diesel Era Magazine
J/A 05 for the UP SD70ACE
S/O 02 for the CP SD90MAC

Dr EMD

PS - Remember when Lionel called a geep with a dynamic brake blister as a GP9 and the one without it a GP7?
Things never change.....
