Post by: hindmarch on March 02, 2008, 05:43:36 AM
Hi Mr B,i purchased a 3 truck shay in analog and it runs very slow whatever speed you try to set , i intend to convert to dcc as  i have all dcc,i dont want to convert if this is not normal with this loco,i have oiled the wheels and drive train but the slow running still exists.Regards Bryan

Hi Bryan,
Have you ever owned a Shay before? The reason I ask is because Shays are geared locomotives, and even the real ones were slow. Bachmann has built them this way. If this is not your first Shay, then more info or sending it back may be in order, but if it IS your first Shay and you are used to rod engines, your Shay is doing what it's supposed to.

Shays are logging locomotives geared to run extremly slow (10 to 15 mph)but will handle grades and trackage the conventional rod locomotives could not.

The funny thing about geared locos is that if you stand close to one moving with closed eyes, you start to brace yourself for the suction as it flies by at 900 MPH from the sound of it.  Then you open your eyes after a minute an it's moved five feet.  :D

Who spots the misplaced modifier?  (I decided to leave it in. ;D)

Gene,

The misplaced modifier is in the first sentence. Oh, and you also missused the word 'an' in the second sentence; you should have used 'and'.

As for Shays, I'm afraid I have nothing to add :(. I don't think there was ever any electric equivelent of a Shay (what kind of logging railroad could afford catenary?).

Actually the Portland Traction Company was in the loggong business.  They used Electric traction to haul log to the mill near Portland Oregon.  After they reached the steeper grades  in the higher country, they did use six shays.   I am told that the shays pulled the log cars to the end of caternary and the steeple cabs took over from there.  It was all standard guage.

Seems there is a prototype for everything!!

Tim,
You're correct about the first; the second was a typo.

We normally use it to support a subordinate clause "I think...(that)...it is hot".

In Spanish it is never omitted.

"The book (that ) you read",  "I bought the shoes (that ) she wanted."

Bob,
That's relative PRONOUN.  The dependent clause may act as an adjective.

You are correct and I changed it.  The point was that we often omit it for brevity.

I love my Bachmann shay.  It is one of the best purchases I have ever made.  I just wish Bachmann would make an HO hiesler or a two truck shay.  Congrats on your new loco.

Yeah, we tend to ramble at times. I don't think you have to change any settings. If it runs slow now, it will run slow on DCC, which seems to be prototypical for the Shay.
Sometimes we have to sorta hang around until the right "expert" comes in.

It might help to know what controller you are using.  If using EZ Command you can't change anything.  Since you mentioned making changes, we can assume you have a more full featured controller.  It's ok to mention other brands on the forum.

Hi Bob,i,m useing  a Roco Digital System whitch is compatable with all DCC-NMRA Controlers ,its expandeble to include up to 31 input devices also RS485 AND ROCOMOTION (x bus).managing 9,999 loco addresses ,20 additional functions for locos and control up to 1,024 turnout addresses,Rocomotion is for PC Control,im using Digitrax Decoders in all my converted analog locos,as its expensive to buy US stuff over hear in europe,i use the european system with a combined US and European locos,i buy my locos from US they below half price from whate we pay here even with the high postage costs, i do not conform to the normal standards as i run US Diesels US locos German locos on my system, hope this gives an idea of what we use here.Regards Bryan

HI BOB sorry about the spelling mistakes my fingers are like hedge stakes today Bryan

Bryan
Don't worry about the mistakes, usually my fingers get ahead of my brain.

Sounds like you are miles ahead of most of us here, although we do have a few DCC gurus.  I was hoping Jim Banner would come in, and he may yet. You and Jim speak the same language.

At my age, I have enough problem keeping up with 2 locos, but 9,999?  I have the EZ Command, any more than 10 buttons I get nervous.  1,024 turnouts?   :o :o

Well, the US Dollar is taking a beating also.  Prices of locos went up about  5-10%.  I saw a few went up 25%.  I bought all my roster last year thank goodness.

It doesn't matter what you run as long as you are having fun.  The only standards you have to meet are your own.

Good luck
Bob
