Title: Sound ?
Post by: tdhowell on February 28, 2007, 02:44:04 PM
I am new to model RR.  I have a Rivarossi DCC compatible stem engine and I am currently not running a DCC system.  Is it possible to run a sound decoder without having a DCC track?

Yes.  Soundtraxx Tsunami can be installed and used on dc.  When you convert to DCC, then you can run it on DCC.  Just be sure the current drawn by your locomotive's motor is within the capabilities of the tsunami.

Jim is correct, and there are other brands which work both on DC and DCC.  However, DCC is the prefered method for several reasons.  Which Rivarossi steam?

Micro-Mark has a product which will activate DCC sounds on straight DC.

It is called the MRC Black Box. The item number is 83670 and their price is discounted to $58.50.

I got one for my Bachmann Forney with sound and it works great.

I had to order it by phone, because it's too new to be on their web site already. Their number is 1-800-225-1066.

Good luck!
