I have 2 power packs with differnent model numbers ,1 is #190220 and the other is # 430225. How can i test them with out hook them up to a simple oval layout to see iif have power to the loco even when its plug into ac outlet.
Use a Grain of Wheat (GOW) bulb or even a small (dashboard type) bulb designed for automobiles. Connect the GOW wires to the track terminals of the power pack you are testing. If your power pack requires a special plug, make sure you have the proper plug and cord. Plug the one end into the power pack and connect the GOW bulb to the other end (one wire to each GOW wire.) If you use the small auto lamp, you will probably have to solder two wires to it.
With the bulb in place, plug in the power pack and turn the throttle (speed control) up and down. The bulb should light brightly at the full speed position, then dim as you turn down the speed control, and probably go out at minimum speed.
