Title: DCC operation.
Post by: geosinner101 on December 13, 2008, 08:30:24 AM
I'm the proud owner of a new Bachmann Spectrum DCC equipped locomotive. What DCC equipment do I need to operate a one Engine (for the moment) layout? Would the Bachmann 44902EZ Command DCC Control System be an answer?

One other question if I might - is the coupler on the Spectrum tender compatable with the Bachmann 'Silver' line of rolling stock? Appreciate any information - thanks.

The 44902 E-Z Command would be a good choice to operate your present DCC locomotive now and additional DCC locomotives in the future.

All present production H0 Bachmann locomotives and cars use E-Z Mate couplers which are compatible not only among themselves but also with couplers used by many other manufacturers.  Older cars by Bachmann and others used a now obsolete type of coupler which can be replaced by Bachmann E-Z Mate couplers or by Kadee couplers, the grandaddy of the modern couplers.

Please do not feel that you have used up your welcome by asking two questions.  There are many friendly people who post on this site and stand ready to answer as many questions as you need to ask.

Hi Geo, welcome to the board.

I use the Bachmann EZ Command on my small layout and like it very much. Very simple to use, just takes one button push to transfer control between locomotives.

Like Jim said, don't be afraid to ask as many questions as you like. Actually the more questions others ask, the more I learn.  :D

Have a great day.

Geo,
I also use the EZ-Command system on my 14X22 layout.  I have 34 engines, (only 26 have DCC), that I run from time to time.  I have separated these into 4 "Groups", that I run so as not to MIX programmed numbers.  I have also left the layout operable for DC.  If you use this system, you will love the simplicity of it.
I have been to 2 clubs that have "Other" DCC systems, and they are also good.  The learning curve of the other systems can be frustrating, tho.
Welcome,
Lee

Bob,
You were going to tell me your secret for switching from one locomotive to another with EZ Command.  I run 3 DCC locomotives:  an Intermountain F7A-B at top speed, a Bachmann SD-45 at 2/3 throttle, & a BLI Heavy Mikado at about 1/3 throttle.  I start the F7 first, dial to top speed, switch to the SD-45 & quickly dial down to 2/3.  The Heavy Mikado does not have momentum or scaled down speed, so I must dial down to zero before starting it.  I have been switching to an unused address to dial down to zero & then switching to the address for the Mikado.  What's your secret?

Bill,
We're leaving for Denver shortly, got our first big blizzard last night. We get high winds that drifts all the roads shut, should be an interesting 6 hour trip, especially through the passes.

I'll drop you an email when I get back Monday. (or Tuesday)  :D

How about some photos of the passes you have to go through. It would be very interesting . Don't forget a bottle of Southern Comfort.
