Title: Name That Locomotive Game
Post by: westsidelumber12 on January 04, 2009, 01:39:17 AM
Alrighty, I'm firing this back up!!!

Same rules as Alex's cause his were better than mine.....have fun and lets hope and this one will strive like the two before it!!!!!

Here are the rules
1. One Contest May Run at a Time. Once a contest is finished anyone may post a picture.
2. Any Gauge and Country are Welcome.
3. Please only use photo's that are of public domain. When in doubt just post a link.
4. If a locomotive has not been named after 24 hours of its posting I will ask if the poster could please "Spill the Beans" so we may be able to move on. However, if there are many legitimate guesses it will stay until solved.
5. Have Fun!
I will start us off

OK I want railroad and locomotive type.......have fun everyone and remember first right guess gets to got next

( I edited the RR and #)

OOOOooooooOOOOOOooo I know that loco. Me and a buddy of mine were making a Trainz model of that. Santa Fe's 2-10-10-2. The locomotive was 2 2-10-0s put together and connected by a hinge. I think the class is a 3000?
Not too big a fan of SG

Please forgive my ignorance, but how do you guys know all of these? Is there a website or book that shows all engine/locomotive models ever produced? I'd love to learn more about this all.

Also, I'm creating my first layout and would love the engines and rolling stock to be as realistic as possible. How do I know if the engines and rolling stock I use are prototypes of the real thing?

Just reading every-thing that you can about railroading has done it for me. After a while you start to notice things(SD's have 6 wheel trucks as aposed to GP's having 4 wheel trucks).

Some people use railroad guidbooks Trains Magazine published a good one but it just went out of print(I'm sure that you can find it pretty easly).

As for your second question there are two ways. After a while you learn things such as when a railroad swiched a paint scheme on their locomotives. For other things it is usaly pretty easy to find what you are looking for. You can usaly find it on the internet(although I prefer books they can get $$$ really fast so only get ones for the roads that you like).

DR was German State Railways, Germany IIRC didn't use letters as classification numbers. Example Class 50/51 2-10-0s.
Title: Re: Name That Locomotive Game
Post by: mtlatc on January 09, 2009, 09:56:24 PM
GG is correct. It is not a N&W J Class.

Hint: Only 12 were built.
Title: Re: Name That Locomotive Game
Post by: Dr EMD on January 10, 2009, 06:53:28 PM
Hint....

Only 10 engines were built and delivered in the end of 1942 - beginning of 1943, so the total number of the new BDZ class 03 remained 12 engines.

Dr EMD.

Title: Re: Name That Locomotive Game

Dr. EMD

That's not a hint, that's a quote from Wikipidiea!

Here is the rest of the quote so everyone has the anwser

From Wiki

"Bulgaria

In 1941 Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) placed order against Henschel & Sohn - Kassel (Germany) for building of 50 standard gauge (1435mm) express passenger locomotives of type 2'D1'h3S (wheel arrangement 2-4-1, simple steam expansion, superheating, 3-cylinder, fast train service), capable to haul heavy passenger trains through highly varied, often severe profiles of Bulgarian main lines with gradients up to 28‰ (1 in 35.7). First two engines delivered by the end of 1941 very quickly proved their perfect qualities as well as the correctness of the specification made by BDZ engineers, already having experience with insufficient power and some constructive problems of classes 01 (1'D1'h2S) and 02 (1'D1'h3S). Next year the mass production began, but alas, was interrupted by war restrictions introduced by German authorities, and subsequently the delivery was totally canceled. Only 10 engines were built and delivered in the end of 1942 - beginning of 1943, so the total number of the new BDZ class 03 remained 12 engines (03.01 - 03.12). After 1958 all of them gradually were converted to mixed fuel oil and coal firing, which resulted in improved steam production and facilitated service especially on mountainous lines. For about 35 years of use they showed excellent performance and minor problems (oval wearing of leading axle's inside crank). One of these machines, 03.12 (serial No. 26575) after factory repair was preserved in perfect condition in the depot of Gorna Oryahovitsa [1] and is to be returned to operation under steam for tourist trains."

Road # was BDZ 30.6

Who's next?
