Dear boxman,

Variable DC would be for controlling the speed of a train in a block of track.

Fixed DC could be used for accessories, though most accessories call for fixed AC.

Fixed DC could also be used as a source of power that would eventually feed a second block, but it would have to have some kind of variable control in between.

There is only so much power from the power pack to be divided between the fixed and variable.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Joe Satnik

The fixed DC terminals are usefull for hooking up to a Capacitor Discharge Unit for the switch motors. I use it that way on my layout with a Tech 3 9500. No more burnt out coils.
