Title: drive line problems on On30 shay
Post by: arthandwv on April 30, 2009, 11:22:51 PM
Hello All,

Has anyone had issues with the front truck on the On30 2 truck shays seizing to the left?

This is a brand new unit and the first time I've had it on curves.  everytime it hits a left hand curve, the front truck seizes to the left and derails  when the track straightens back out. :'(

Any Ideas?

Thanks Much
Art.

Are you operating on less than 18" radius?
If you gently turn the truck by hand does it feel a bind?
Does this happen when you back through the curves?
If the screw through the bolster that holds the truck on is tight maybe loosen 1/8 turn. There should be a little play/ wobble in the truck but don't let the screw be loose and fall out.

I had the same issue with my Shay.  It turned out that one of the angled contact wires from the truck had shifted upward and was catching a bit when it turned.  Try loosening the truck bolster screw all the way until you can remove the truck, then check the two angled copper wires that form the electrical contacts.  On mine, one protruded from the truck center higher than the other, and after I gently pushed it back down, the problem was solved.

I hope yours turns out to be as easy to fix as mine was!
