Title: Different Model Bachmann Tsunami Decoders?
Post by: n2trainz on June 07, 2009, 04:39:02 PM
Does Bachmann use the same Tsunami based decoder in all the various model locomotives?

If different models are used, what are the differences (is it CVs, different whistles, etc.)

Thanks in advance.

I don't know who makes or has made Decoders for Bachmann.

The sound decoders CV values are located to the left in red & white - Product Reference -> DCC Sound -> Sound Decoders CV Defaults.

Bachmann Spectrum sound on board locomotives have "Tsunami Technology" digital sound decoders installed at the factory, explained on the following page:

http://www.soundtraxx.com/factory/

For specifications, please download the following PDF files:

http://www.soundtraxx.com/manuals/Bachmann%20Quick%20Start%20Guide.pdf

http://www.soundtraxx.com/manuals/OEM%20Steam%20Users%20Guide.pdf

User installed Soundtraxx sound decoders are made in Light Steam, Medium Steam and Heavy Steam versions, each for a specific model or range of models. I don't know if this applies to the Bachmann OEM models, you should contact Soundtraxx tech support for this information.

Bachmann currently does not offer sound equipped diesel locomotives, only steam.

Presumably the motor control sections of the Tsunami technology decoders for H0 are different than the ones for large scale due to the different current draws of the motors involved.  There may also be simplifications in the technology, for example, being able to program the decoders for varying speaker sizes could be eliminated if all large scale installations have 3" speakers while all H0 installations have 1" speakers.  With BEMF control available, it is possible to do away with mechanical synchronization of chuff sounds, at least to the point of being able to virtually eliminate stationary locomotives sitting still and chuffing or slow moving locomotives gliding silently as they lift a long, heavy train.

The Quick Start Guide for Spectrum locomotives with Tsunami technology decoders mentions that the CD packed with the locomotives includes the Technical Reference Manual for these decoders.  Comparing it to the Tsunami Technical Reference Manual on the Soundtraxx website will indicate what, if any, features have been simplified in the Bachmann versions of the decoder.

Yes, it would seem that the current ratings would possibly be greater for the large scale stuff.  But then, "retail" Tsunamis are only available with 3/4 and 1 amp ratings.

As with the "retail" Tsunamis, it appears that since they don't distinguish any models in the User's Guide, that the CVs are the same across the board.

How about the whistles?  Do they have different whistles programmed in the different locomotive wheel arrangements?

Thanks for the links to the manuals, Bob.  I hadn't seen those before.

I'm curious if the Tech reference on the CD packed with the locomotive is specific to the installed decoder, or the same as the one on the website.

I would think the OEM decoders are matched to the class of locomotive, but I've learned not to assume anything.

Soundtraxx is just "down the road" from me, I'll call tomorrow and get a few more details. "George" has been very gracious about answering my previous questions about Tsunamis. I will also ask about the whistle selections on OEM versions.

Meanwhile, any members who have Bachmann sound on board locomotives might add comments regarding the installed sound version or limitations of their OEM models.

Jack, There are more manuals at the Soundtraxx site.

Thanks for the link, Bob.

I would like to know as much about the differences between all these decoders as possible.

I have been (with the help of several others) updating the Tsunami decoder definitions for the DecoderPro program with the JMRI folks.  We just about have the diesel stuff down pat, and the "retail" steam Tsunamis are getting close.  But I suspect that the present file containing the Bachmann sound decoders is in need of serious help.

The more information I can gather from folks using these, the more accurate we can make the definition file.  I've read through the manuals you linked me to, and also a spec sheet that simply lists all the CVs in the Bachmann sound decoders, and have already obtained some good info.  The whistles are one area though, that I've seen nothing.

Thanks for the help thus far, folks.

Regards,
Jack

Hi Jack,
I didn't get a chance to call Soundtraxx today, I'll try again tomorrow if I have time.  Actually you might get all the information you need for your definition file by emailing them, with a list of what you need. If you phone, ask for George, he is always eager to help.

I am also curious since others have inquired about the OEM versions, if I find out anything will post it here.

Regards.

I was hoping Mr. Bach Man would jump in on this.

Dear All,
Bob and Jim are correct: all the decoders are the same, and are programmed for each locomotive. The CVs can be changed by you.
Have fun!

Jack,
I finally contacted Soundtraxx today. Please refer to my new thread "Bachmann Sound Locomotives" in the HO section for information.
