Title: E-z command unit with digitrax decoders
Post by: abe on June 19, 2009, 06:05:35 PM
Hi,
I am new to DCC.
Can you tell me if I can use Digitrax decoders with the Bachmann EZ command system?
The Digitrax decoders are smaller and the Bachmann decoders don't fit into my N scale locomotives.
Thanks for answering my question.

Yes, you can use the digitrax decoders.  There is a very good book from Model Railroader called "The DCC Guide," by Don Fiehmann.  It will answer a LOT of your questions.  Check at your LHS.  Hope this helps.

Digitrax makes some nice decoders for use in N-scale, including the DZ123, DZ125 and DZ143.  Smaller than a dime, they will provide up to an amp of current.  Even though they are designated for Z-scale (the Z in the part number) they are useable in most N-scale and H0-scale applications as well.

The low cost DZ123 has two lighting outputs as well as many other goodies.  The DZ125 is similar but is also compatible with Digitrax's tiny Sound Bug sound decoder and it has BEMF control, a sort of cruise control that works very well in switchers.  The DZ143 is like the DZ123 except it has two extra lighting outputs which are nice if you have a diesel crying out for ditch lights.

You can run all Digitrax decoders with the Bachmann E-Z Command, change their addresses, and set normal direction of travel.  The latter is useful if you have two diesels that you would like to run back to back in a consist as you often see on full sized railroads.

You will not be able to change things like momentum, speed tables, or fancy lighting effects with an E-Z Command but these can often be programmed for you by a local club, your local hobby shop, or perhaps a friend.  Then they will work just fine with you E-Z Command.  Or you can use the default settings that come preprogrammed into the decoder when you buy it.  This seems to be what most people do and it works out well for them.

Hi Abe,
When I tried installing a Digitrax DH123 in a Bachmann HO 2-8-0, speed was somewhat erratic over the throttle range. Rather than clip the capacitors on the board, I switched back to a Bachmann brand decoder.

In another Bachmann 2-8-0, I removed the pc board and hardwired a DH123 decoder, it ran great.

You didn't indicate the brand/model of your N scale locos. If they are Bachmann, you may have to clip any noise suppression capacitors existing in the loco. I'm not familiar with Bachmann N scale to know the circuitry, perhaps Jim can advise you on this matter.

Regards.
