I am using a HO scale ruler. I made the table legs 3 scale feet long. I am not sure what is going wrong.

Cool Thank you. Mine does have the numbers mention at the end. So I make sure I line the edge of the wood at the "0" mark.

With my HO scale ruler if I want a building to be 40 feet in HO scale feet, do I mark my piece of wood at the 40 mark? Thus making my building 40 HO scale feet long.

I want to construct a mountain with a tunnel on my layout. How do I know the correct dimensions to make it for a HO scale layout?

That's like asking "How deep is a hole?"

There is no right answer.

My suggestion is to purchase two tunnel portals, single or double track and go from there.  Also, buy some books on scenery.  In fact, buy the books first.  Kalmbach sell a few good ones.  Do you purchase model railroad magazines?  I do that as well.  Lots of good hints and tips in those.

Best of luck.

Roger T.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have the portals and I subscribe to Model Railroader. I will get scenery books.

The answer is yes they all make a mess, and to answer your other quote, you will never find one that will puff in sync with the chuff if you are thinking they will smoke when your engine chuffs.

Thank you everyone for your informative comments. I will fore go the idea of having a smoke generator.

General Discussion / What starter DCC system to puchase?
September 13, 2014, 02:00:05 PM
I am not sure which DCC system to purchase. What is a good inexpensive starter DCC system? My current layout is small I am only running 1 train at a time.

Hate to harp on it but I will.  Don't, you will regret it.

Do the ones with a pre installed smoke gen still make a mess?

I have heard that about them. I may just wait til i get a steam engine with one already install that is synced to DCC.
Thanks

I recently install a Suethe No. 22 Smoke Generator in a HO Mikado Steam Engine. It did not work. I got about 2 - 3 puffs of smoke then nothing. Where did I go wrong?
