HO / Re: Derailing At Turnouts
May 02, 2008, 06:41:05 PM
I have tried without the B Unit, no luck, the only other cars I have are Athearn Heavyweight Passenger cars, they derail as well. I can roll the B Unit by hand with a slight push and it rolls right through, but hooked up to the loco, it derails, I have tried different speeds, same outcome. - Rock

HO / Re: Derailing At Turnouts
May 02, 2008, 06:27:51 PM
I just bought 2 turnouts, regular remote, HO scale, EZ Track NS, RH and a LH. My loco negotiates both turnouts just fine, forward and reverse. My B Unit (Dummy) derails everytime at the LH turnout. No other cars will follow the loco either, they derail. I can back up and they won't derail, but heading into the LH turn on the turnout, the wheels jump off. Its like the trucks are not following, or hitting the frog going into the turn, they want to keep going straight. I believe they are the old style, they have rivets. Both LHS I went to, all they had were the old style. Is there a remedy?  Thank you - Rock.

The word mucho I assume is Spanish for much, but adding the suffix "ino" is making up a term that has no more validity as a word than a mispelling of one such as heighth. Now surely you are not saying that no ones deserves having a bad dictionary day.
I take offense to the way the post was worded. Starting off with the phrase "First of all". In communication classes that are taught in college, it is not considered good communication skills. It can be interpreted that the person is saying "Before I can lower myself to your level to answer your question, I must correct your spelling or grammar errors".
I think any reasonably intelligent person would have known what I was talking about even though I incorrectly spelled a word. There  is no need to talk down to someone. Have you ever read about different dialect from different areas of the United States? The mdwest pronounces words differently than say someone from the east or west?  I have been around the block a couple of times myself. Let's get back to railroading rather than nitpicking (did I spell that right?) the spelling of a word. Have you ever heard the phrase "People who live in glass houses......" or do I need to finish the phrase to get the point across? - Rock

One shouldn't correct the spelling of a word and then use a term like mucherino, which is not a word either. Just a thought.

I have been using sprigs of Sprirea (its a garden shrub), with the dried flowers still on top for the Woodlands scenic foam to stick to it. Then using WS course light green and a little WS dead grass(fine) and WS green grass(fine). Painting the trunks white with dabs of black for white birch trees. Its satisfies my taste so far. My goal when I started was to make as much from scratch as possible, and have been finding that very fun and interesting. Another shrub sprig I have been using is from a Potentilla bush, the sprigs are rough so it looks like bark, and they make great dead looking trees. Thanks for the tip on using hairspray for adhesive, my wife has a full product line already LOL.  Ohhhh, good clover honey is great! (I don't mean as an adhesive........hey wait a minute.... let me think...) LOL  - Rock :)

No  problem Mike, it wouldn't have been fixed without someone telling me it was wrong. The false accusations of being insensitive to other members abilities is what gets my German/Swede blood up. We all make mistakes, for we are human. Thank you for bringing it up, thats what these forums are for is to learn and discuss, right? LOL - rock

EMD F3-7 Great Northern is my favorite, only because I grew up in a RR town and remember seeing steam loco's and the diesels in the rail yard quite often, but first and only train ride was from Superior, WI to St. Paul/Minneapolis MN, on the Badger. It was around 1958. Most of my friends dads worked for the Great Northern, and I still remember the controversy in my home town when Burlington merged or took over. So its more sentimental than anything. I have searched and cannot seem to find what diesels were actually used for the Badger Express, other than I believe they were F7's. The city across the river in MN. ran the Gopher Express from Duluth to St. Paul/Minneapolis MN. And I remember that one in the yard as well. If I am wrong on any of this informaton please corrrect me, the records of the Badger and Gopher are quite incomplete that I can find. The Jr highschool I went to had a bust of James Hill founder of the
Empire Builder in front of it, that school is tore down now and the bust has been moved to the BN railyard in town. The school was also used as a summer Whitehouse for President Calvin Coolidge so he could trout fish the Brule River in Wisconsin. - Rock

Sorry Yampa Bob but the resoloution I used was 640 x 480. I am not a computer wizard, thats why it turned out that way. I too have to scroll across to look at it. I just try things by trial and error. Sorry don't know how to fix it, or I would. I am certainly not trying to leave anyone behind because I am at the back of the line myself. I use Windows XP and IE, my computer is 4 years old. Someone said I have a broken thread, to me that means I need to learn to sew. Sorry, I don't know how to fix it. - rock
p.s. I went back in and figured out how to fix it and it looks like I did. Sorry for ruffling your feathers, it wasn't intentional.

General Discussion / Re: Picture of my bluff

I used Liquid Nails to glue the 2'' thick foam pieces together so it is one large block. Then after the glue dried, I took out my filet knife and started slashing the crevices in the foam. I coated it with a product I bought at Menard's its a store like Lowe's or Home Depot. The product is Durham's Rock Hard Water Putty. Its a powder you mix with water to the consistency you like. I started out with a really thin watery coat, let it dry, and then dabbed areas with thicker coat to cover the seams of the foam. When this stuff dries, it is a yellowish color, so I just dabbed in some brown colors of watered down tempra paint, and then sprayed it with black tempra paint thinned out with water. I did this a couple of times adding just a drop or two more paint added to the water. After it dried I sprayed it with white glue and water mixture to set the paint. Then I added the Woodland Scenics ground cover. Total time put into the bluff was only a few hours. Because of drying time, thinking time (LOL), it really didn't take long at all. I had some good information from the Woodland Scenics Manual, Steam Gene, and a few others as well. It took longer to take the first step to start painting it, I was apprehensive about screwing it up. But I don't think you can if you follow the steps from Woodland Scenics. I plan on putting in a Train Station on opposite end of layout, with a side rail. I have a small river thats almost done with a Truss Bridge going across it that I built. I will have a small business district down by the Train Station. I am going with a late 1950's, early 60's era theme. I am trying to make as much of my scenery homemade as possible. I made two birch trees today and put them on the bluff, many more trees to make. I am using pieces of shrub from my yard for trunks, and using Woodland Scenics for foilage, painting the trunks white and black like a white birch. Also made some black spruce trees out of very small pine cones. I will put up more pics when I get more scenery done. I still have track to lay as well. My goal is to never finish LOL. Thank you very much for your compliments. - rock

Thanks grumpy, I am searching for good looking birch trees, so far my search has come up empty. Actually, I havent been able to find any evergreens that look good either. Maybe my standards are too high, I live in the woods and so far have not really seen any HO scale trees that look good. In most cases the trunks of the trees are too thick for their heighth. I have been searching outside for natural type material to use for the trunks of trees. So far the dead twigs from a Potentilla bush looks to be the best bet for birch tree trunks. Of course I will have to paint them and add foilage. But I think they will work, as well as maybe some sprigs of a Spirea bush may provide a trunk with branches. Very small pinecones with the lower husks removed and painted a very dark green wih tinge of black make pretty good Colorado Spruce. The search goes on. - rock

Thank you all for taking your time to look and your input. And thank you for the link Yampa Bob, what a great site. I am working on a small river, and have been experimenting with that glossy medium he uses. I was shocked to see him using it also for water. So I may be on the right track (no pun intended) for that too. Thanks again - rock

Here is a picture of my pink foam mountain, actually its a bluff, but in Wisconsin its a mountain. I still have trees to add, so I am not quite done. This is my first attempt, and I think it turned out quite well.
