On30 / Re: replacement gears

No, I have not received any of the three sets I requested (Climax, Shay, and railbus). I sent a follow up email but I have not received a reply. Not happy, but it was a free offer, so I suppose I can't complain.

On30 / Re: Another new loco idea.

I too would love this, though i doubt that it will happen as, to date. Bachmann has not made an On30 item with a prototype from a non US manufacturer. Please Bachmann, prove me wrong.

Williams by Bachmann / Re: JP's Wishlist for 2014

Given the re-intriduction of the former super streets range as EZ Streets by WBB, a modest expansion in the streetcar, traction area would seem to be a good idea. The Peter Witt cars do go around the wider EZ street curves, another trolley for your roads appeals to me. The Birney  safety car, as made in HO, would seem a possible choice, the Peter Witt appeared in HO before it turned up in WBB. I would also like to see a steeple cab, add some freight to your trolley operations.

Just my thoughts

On30 / Re: 2-6-0 suggestion for Bachmann
October 31, 2013, 09:38:30 AM
I think I was the first to mention the new loco - and my post is still there. I deliberately refrained from mentioning the maker or the prototype as the rules for this forum specifically forbid posting other makers product announcements, and I didn't want to break them. Bachmann own the site and Bachmann set the rules. The point was that On30 is still getting some rtr support from makers other than Bachmann.

On30 / Re: 2-6-0 suggestion for Bachmann
October 29, 2013, 10:26:50 PM
This thread seems to have turned into a future of On30 discussion rather than the original suggestion of a kit version of the 2-6-0.

I agree that On30 has plateaued. Bachmann will I think continue to support On30, but the range of different items available at any one time is likely to be less than it used to be. It is not the case that other manufacturers have entirely abandoned ready to run  On30 - in Australia a new ready to run  On30 loco has been announced by a company based in Taiwan. As this is the Bachmann board I will not give any details here.

In my view Bachmann should continue to make available one or more entry level and easily modifiable locmotive, both to attract newcomers to the scale and to provide an item for the many kit bashers in the scale.  The 2-6-0 has  fulfilled this role. Given it has been out for a long time a replacement. or a significantly modified version, could be considered. This would still fulfill the functions of the 2-6-0 as an entry level loco, and also be attractive to those who already have the earlier version.  I agree though that a kit version could probably not be produced cheaper than the ready-to-run version.

That is a very funky engine that would be right at home on a backwoods short line.

I remember seeing one similar to it on the Cripple Creek and Victor (2' gauge), but that was a long time ago.

Les

The Cripple Creek loco is a Meyer type loco made by the British firm, Bagnall. Meyer locomotives have two swivelling truck, both with cylinders attached, mounted under the boiler. They differ from Mallets, which have only one swivelling truck, and Garratts which have the boiler in between the trucks. Meyers were made by a number of European and British makers. The Vulcan duplexes were broadly similay to Meyers, but presumably did not use the Meyer patents. Only about 7 Vulcan duplexes were made.

General Discussion / Re: All the same loco's

The ex GWR 101 0-4-0t  has been released in LSWR and Southern Railway liveries (as well as numerous fictious private owners, which I am not counting). The inside cylinder industrial 0-4-0t has bee released as LBSCR. The Caledonian Railway 0-4-0st has been released as Highland Railway. This list is probably not complete and only includes relatively recent releases. Nor does it include the wrong livery from the right company.

General Discussion / Re: All the same loco's

Actually British makers have released locomotives in liveries they never had, currently Bachmann's main british competitor releases small tank locos in liveries of railways that never had that class, or in liveries the railway had, but did not apply to the locos concerned.

The difference is in the prototype situation, from 1923 Britain had 4 main railways, and  from 1948, one (British Railways.)  Thus it has been relatively easy for makers to provide a varied roster for each company.  In America there were many more railroads, making varied rosters for each railroad a lot more difficult unless the same loco is produced for several roads. Not surprisngly  makers cheat a bit to do this. In Britain makers do offer the same loco with different liveries, usually those worn at different stages of its life, e.g. the post 1923 company (GWR, LMS, LNER, SR), and British Railways. A class may have had more than one livery in the same ownership, adding to the variations possible. Occasionally a suitable locomotive is offered in pre 1923 livery, as well as later liveries. The aim is the same , increase sales by offering several different versions from the same tooling.

On30 / Real life 30inch Gauge Climax back in service!
August 11, 2013, 07:58:35 AM
The Climax at the 30 inch gauge Puffing Billy railway is to re-enter service, see http://www.puffingbilly.com.au/news-events/climax-locomotive-recommissioning/

This loco is probably the only 30 inch gauge Climax made, It is about the same size as the Bachmann model, but more modern. If Bachmann ever revises the Climax, perhaps.......

As I have posted on other threads, in the current circumstances one new On30 locomotive a year is all that can be reasonably expected. This years offering is not to my taste, but that's life.  However in recent years there has usually also been an item or two of rolling stock, so I do consider the new items to be a bit light on.

I am still hoping for an excursion car!

Is the reason that there were no new rolling stock items announced this year that Bachmann are having trouble keeping up with the demand for the 18 foot cars announced last year, so have deferred further new items in order to meet the demand for the 18 foot cars?

Looks nice - if you want a diesel.

Still no excursion cars.

At least Bachmann is continuing to introduce new products in On30, even if there is nothing I want.

On30 / Coupler for 0-4-2 Porter
June 18, 2013, 10:27:47 AM
Can  somebody please tell me which  EZ Mate Mk 2 coupler is used on the 0-4-2 Porter?  Also which couplers for the old high frame style freight cars and the side tipper cars?  I need to replace some of my Old Mk 1 couplers.

Many thanks

On30 / Re: Giving up the Shay?
May 17, 2013, 12:18:37 AM
It has become clear that quite a lot of existing models will be discontinued in the not too distant future. This doesn't only apply to On30. Bachmann appears to be keeping a smaller range of models available at any one time than they used to, probably to reduce overheads and costs in the current economic times. Runs are either shorter or reruns less frequent (probably both). The Shay will no doubt reappear at some time, modified or not. I am sure a reasonable range on On30 will continue to be available, but not necessarily any particular  item.

The bottom line , if there is a currently available item that you want, buy it now!

In recent years Bachmann has made major new On30 announcements at the NMRA convention in summer.  Major new On30 announcements are not usually made in the catalogue. (items shown as "new" have been announced or delivered since the last catalogue.) While the Heisler was announced quite some time ago (delayed due to production problems) the 2-4-4-2 and the 18 foot cars were announced at the 2012 NMRA convention, hardly long announced and delivered. The next announcements should be at the 2013 NMRA convention in July. In the current economic climate i think that one new locomotive and some new rolling stock each year is pretty good, and all we can expect.

For the locomotive my choice would be a tank locomotive larger than the Porters but not a Forney, e.g. a 2-6-2t or 0-6-2t etc, and , for the rolling stock, excursion cars. But we can't all get our favourites, as long as there is at least one new locomotive and some new rolling stock I will be happy.
