General Discussion / Re: Your layouts
March 27, 2008, 08:01:51 AM

Tim's at it again. This time he's constructing a layout to take to Train shows with him.
You should see the quality of his work, & the speed at which it is accomplished. Note the dates on the images.
This should be an inspiration for anyone building a layout.

Well worth a look.

Sid,

I'm sorry you had to rip up your layout, it must be gut wrenching, when you're forced. It's good to hear you're looking on the bright side though.

Tim Warris who built the Port Kelsey, featured in April-May 1997 issue of Canadian Railway Modeller magazine & August 1997 issue of Model Railroader magazine, had to tear it down, when the new owners were not interested in a model railroad in their recently acquired house. Pity a model railroader didn't buy the house.
http://www.port-kelsey.com/

My layouts barely reach the scenic stage, before I have a bigger & better plan. In the land of Oz, timber is much more expensive than in the States, so I have bought some old supermarket gondolas [shelving system] & this will negate 60% of the timber benchwork. It also has the advantage of being easily dissembled, should [or in my case 'when] the need arise(s).

My latest design has 300ft of mainline, & nearly 100 ft of branchlines. The marshaling yard & dock will have 150ft of track, not including the points, crossings & leads.

Now, to just tear down the old layout, to make some room.

General Discussion / 00 SCALE POLL
March 06, 2008, 10:57:32 PM

G'day All,

There is an online Poll for 00 Scale Locos & Rolling Stock currently running in Model Railway Express e-Mag.

Hornby & Bachmann UK take an interest in this poll, & although the most popular items on the list may not be built, other factors such as availability of Engineering Drawings, difficulty of manufacture & competition in the market place; to name a few, contribute as well.

I know a few of you who read this forum are interested in OO scale British Outline, so, thought you may be interested in participating.

The ONLINE poll is set out with three columns.
The first is the "Period", on a drop down menu. BR, SR, LMS, etc
Then there is your loco choice; be prepared to briefly describe your choice [eg : LMS 4-6-2 Princess class].
The last column is the number of locos of each type, you would purchase.

You can choose up to ten items on your list.
You can only vote Once as it recognizes your IP address & prevents you from voting again.

Look for  "2008 Wish List Pol" on the left side of the screen.

Good Luck.

HO / Re: Another GS-4 Daylight!
February 18, 2008, 05:49:42 AM

Bachmanns GS-4 is priced right, & that means anyone can get BIG Steam on their layout for a reasonable price. But it isn't Spectrum quality, & I have been spoiled by it.

It's a pity Bachmann didn't release it in Spectrum grade.
So, I'm going to wait for the BLi/PCM version.....whenever that will be.

Why do wolves bay at the moon?
maybe worried their GS-4's won't sell!

Thanks Jake,

That's exhaust steam to my ears  ;D - just what I wanted to hear.

I assume the detail & running characteristics are good?

G'Day Thommo,

The RR Heisler is a peach of a loco. I have two; one with over 100 hours & the other is just a babe with about 20 hours.

I've found they like to be well lubed - That is " A LITTLE OIL - OFTEN ! "

Remember these were not fast locos so if they complain, you may be going too fast.

Don't forget to keep your track & wheels clean - they get a bit fussy about that.

The Bachmann Switcher is a great little loco & everyone should have at least one....or two...or...

HO / Blackstone K-27
February 12, 2008, 04:26:22 AM

G'Day All,

I was wondering if anyone has a Blackstone K-27, with OEM Tsunami sound.

I wanted to know if the chuff rate was correctly synchronized to the wheel movement at different speeds & loads. This being a common problem with OEM tsunami products. :-\

Oh NO!

NO!...NO!...NO!

The Triplex may have another problem.

"the gears stripped out on the rear driver set. All of this happened before we even hooked it up to a train".  Tony's Forum.

I really hope Tony's just got the one build on friday & I hope mine's a Tuesday train.

Rich,
I'm prayin' all's well with the front engine. I'm always worried about sending things back to the US as all the Yo-Yo mailing costs build up. :(

That's the spirit, you whoop some sense into that RCS baggage car, ya-hear. ;)

Sheldon hit the nail on the head, & I don't see Mike doing one, DCC Ready.

Hav'in a great day Down Under,
though, my toes are gettin' tired hanging on to the ground ;D

Have a Great,

Happy New Year,

Is the Triplex considered a Tank Engine like the Beyer Garratt?

This occurred to me, from a another thread; either on this or the previous Bachmann Forum,  where a member suggested the Garratt was a Tank Engine, because the Tenders were fixed to the rigid frames of the two engines.  :o

So by that reckoning; and I'm not saying I agree with it, does the Triplex suffers the same fate??? ;)

The Triplex model on the other hand, could not be considered a tank engine, as the engine under the tender is not powered - I just can't get a grasp on these straws today. ;D

Either way, I can't wait for my new 2-8-8-8-2 [Tank???] engine to arrive. :)

Cheers & all the best for the New Year.

When was the Triplex announced?

No matter,  MTH has sent the first batch of Erie's to MTH Dealers on the 29th, so expect them soon.

Virginia's will arrive in a few weeks.

The only thing I don't like,  the third engine is not powered.

Is the Triplex considered a Tank Engine like the Beyer Garratt?

HO / Re: Turnouts?

Quote from: Jim Banner on December 29, 2007, 04:00:01 PM

Generally, if you want the best price, the best looking and the best working turnouts, then you will have to learn to hand lay your own.  But hand laid turnouts are certainly not the easiest to install.

G'Day,

Jim's absolutely right, Hand Laid is the best by far.

I use Fast Tracks fixtures, but they are a little pricey up front, unless you intend to make a lot or are in a club. Results are accurate every time.

You can also get Twist Ties, which are a set of wooden sleepers, pre drilled for spikes, space to NMRA standards & are FLEXIBLE, so you can make curved turnouts as well. These are a lot cheaper up front. If you can wield a set of Spike Pliers, & a soldering iron[frog] you're there!

I got a set of Twist Ties for my father in law, & he can knock one out in less than an hour.
