Right now my Spectrum 0-6-0T is apart but it would be nice to know as my Mantua 0-6-0T with a DZ125 decoder can pull 27 oz. That is 10 cars before leaving the yard and entering a little grade. Most of the cars have plastic wheels though. Probably would be better with all metal wheels but really not important.

Lex; your 0-6-0T does not have drawbar pull of 27 oz - it may be able to pull a train which weighs 27 oz.

And some modern cars such as an AutoMax may exceed the NMRA gauge.

Thanx again.

It is possible, but it would take a great deal of knowledge of wiring and software to do it - it would be easier to skip the E-Z Command all together, and just have the computer generate the DCC signal, and feed it into a power booster.

HO / P&WV 2-6-6-4
February 28, 2010, 04:00:47 PM
Hi;

Has anyone tackled making a model of the P&WV 2-6-6-4 locomotives?

I have been planning one for years, but have not yet found the time to start on the project. My inclination is to use a PRR M1a/M1b boiler as a form (and I am looking for one at a low price), shortened Mantua 2-8-0 chassis, with gearboxes from a Mantua 2-6-6-2.

Any suggestions and sources of information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Nigel

Or better yet, go to:

and get the originals.

Atlas has a Master series; the Atlas Master™ Series Gold with QSI® sound, and the DCC ready Atlas Master™ Series Silver.  These are their top of the line.

Also note, with recent corporate changes in China, almost all models are now made by Kader, Bachmann's parent.

inv tan(1/6) is approximately 9½°
so a Joe mentioned, look for a section or combination of sections that will equal about 9½° - 10° is probably close enough.

Personally; I'd take an 18° section of 35.5" radius, and cut it in half, then use rail joiners, a bit of adhesive and a splice plate to hold the half section to switch.  If only a small amount of adhesive is used, it will not be difficult to pop it off.  The 35.5" radius will provide smooth operation.

The current Spectrum SD45 model is very very good.  Not quite Kato, but you get more for your $$ with the Spectrum model.

Thank you both for your answers - this one most definitely has the motor in the boiler, and if it has ever turned a wheel under power, I'll eat it with a sauce of your choice.

The seller wants $100 for it.

He has about 300 more hidden away, he says, and I'm hoping that I get to see them, or at least, some more of them, before he and the real world part company.

Thanks again.

One thing to watch out for - and improve - is the number on electrical pickups.  Rivarossi used kind of a brush backed by a coil spring in cylinder.  There are not enough pickups, and if the motor becomes the slightest bit overloaded, the pickups that are there over heat and start melting the surrounding plastic.

It is easy to make additional pick-ups from phosphor bronze strip, and solder them to a thin PC board you add on the bottom between the drivers.  The bronze strip rubs against the drivers.  Or you can get Tomar or similar sliders - see Walthers.

I have a question about bachmann's Baldwin 2-8-0 DCC Southern 724 Blk/Wht/Red. this is a DCC locomotive, i know DCC can run on DC track, but can it be controlled by a basic DC controller?
Yes.

ali;

The easiest, and probably least expensive way is to purchase DCC equipped locomotives, and retire the locomotives in the set.

It is not clear from your post if you already have a DCC system or not - if not, you'll need one of those too.

I have a dcc 44 ton ,I 'm attempting to put a led becon on it ,but because this has bidirectional lighting the led works only one way because of the polarity is there a constant 15 volts that you can use on the bachman decoder???

If you do not want to control the beacon at all, just wire it up to the track - you may want to put some dropping resistors in series.

Bachmann's DCC Equipped motive power uses a very basic decoder with limited functionality.  I am pretty sure you will need to replace the decoder if you want more functions than the already used in the model.
