Well thats what DCC is for and every controller is different so I would read the directions they will tell you.
If you use Bachmann E-Z Track I would recommend the Bachmann E-Z Command DCC controller.

Me I use HORNBY track and I am fine with their Analouge controls.

Yeah they also have a light signal that looks EXACTLY LIKE THE ONE IN THOMAS AND BERTIES GREAT RACE   

They are manual there is a switch on the side so you can film the signal changing without your hand in the shot

HORNBY makes them. Not on the Thomas range but they look like they do on the show... I am getting them for Christmas

Plus Bachmann already has his base.
