Tuff (sp) luck,  Mark.   Why don't you go one up on Erie and Virginian  and construct a 2-8-8-0 with the second set of drivers under the tender?  :D
You'd still have a regular 2-8-0 to add to your roundhouse.
Gene

A 2-8-8-0 eh? That's a thought. Now where did I hide those consolidations - come out, come out, where ever you are, this won't hurt a bit!!!??!   ;)

HO / Well,Well,Well....Three holes in the ground.
November 29, 2007, 05:36:36 PM

G'day all,

I recently bought three Bachmann 2-8-0's at a garage sale for $15.
I was told they either run badly or don't run at all.
That's great, just what I wanted - spare detail parts, tenders  etc. :)

I arrived home & decided to give them a run before disassembling them.
I noticed they had dirty wheels, so cleaned them, which showed the lack of plating left.
These were very old, well run spectrum locos.

The first one ran smoothly, so is a keeper......damn! :-\

The second one was a little rough & noisy,,, a few drops of oil & it ran smoothly, so, a keeper......damn!  :o

The third ran well on the straight track & right hand curves, but not left. Inspection of the electrical pickups revealed extreme ware on one side.
This loco must have spent its entire life on a left hand oval.
If I can acquire a set of electrical pickups from Bachmann’s parts division, I'll end up with yet another keeper.......Damn!  :'(

Well, well, well,     there must be a Moral to this story...... ???

HO / Re: Some other guy's steam locomotive product

Well, I'm going out on a limb here & saying I'm getting one.

They're not that big, really. The Triplex is actually shorter than an ATFS 4-8-4 #37xx. The BLi N&W A class, Proto 2-8-8-2's, & Hornby/Riva's 2-6-6-6 dwarf the rather diminutive Triplex.

I was never really interested in Erie, but since the MTH announcement, I have had a closer look & found Bachmann make an Erie, 2-10-0, & their Consolidation is close enough to convert. Bli makes the Heavy Mikado, so there is a good variety of locos to model. So Bachmann has already profited from MTH's choice, & Bli will when they release the Erie Mikado. At least I'll be kept busy in the Engine shop until early 2008.

Like the rest of you, I would love a non-PRR pacific, Atlantic,& early 4-4-0, & that's just scraping the surface.

I know the general view of Model Railroading is to choose a Road & model it, but I just love the engineering, be it a masterpiece or wonderful disaster; & the Triplex was just that!

While researching the Erie thing, I looked into the DMIR. Bachmann makes the DMIR 2-10-2, & their Ten wheeler & Consolidation are candidates for conversion to that Road. If MTH would only make a Yellowstone to go with them :)

Cheers.

On30 / Re: On30 layout survey
July 04, 2007, 08:12:28 AM

My current layout plan started as a module in HO, but after laying a little test track, I decided to make it ON30. I assumed HO would require less room, but most of my HO locomotives are large & therefore require long trains. ON30 being narrow gauge appears fine on this size Layout.

1/. When complete, it will have a small harbour for general goods & coal. A coal mine in the second scene. Finally a logging scene & below a freight siding.

2/. Buildings will be mixed.

3/. Era is debatable, so is the Road.

4/. 10x5, with three distinct "views" containing a total of six differing scenes.

Unfortunately, some delusional person  laid some unused EZ Track & a Magnum controller for a little weekend fun, that has lasted for a couple of months. Thanx to this thread, hostile takeover plans have been exercised & the ad-hoc railroad is being removed, so building can continue.

HO / Re: Spectrum 2-8-0 and Sound
June 26, 2007, 06:28:57 AM

Hi All,

I just received my MRC Black Box & connected it to my Bachmann Magnum controller.
I never knew there were so many sounds in a Bachmann Forney, Heavy Mountain & 2-10-2.
As you would expect, it also works great on dual mode DC/DCC LL, BLi, PCM Athearn & Roundhouse locos.
Apart from accessing all the sounds, switching the lights on & off & throttle, when the Reverse button is pressed the loco slows to a stop, changes direction [toots three times - on some locos] & accelerates off in the opposite direction - very civilised.

BUT, YOU CAN'T USE IT on DC locos! - they just sit there & sing insect songs buzz buzz.

HO / Buzzing Decapod
June 25, 2007, 08:22:28 PM
Hi All,

I have four Russian Decapods; one from the first batch, & three bought over the last 18 months. The three newer ones all have Buzzing motors when running foreward. They are all 'DCC ready', so no chip fitted.

I am currently using a Bachmann Magnum DC throttle, but it also occurs on an H&M [smooth] DC as well.

When enough power is supplied to turn the wheels, the motor hums & buzzes, sort of a Waw-Waw-waw sound. this buzzing continues no matter what speed it is run, although the faster you go, the quieter it is; though still audiable. It initially buzzes in reverse, but this stops when the wheels are moving continuously from very low speeds.

Has anyone encountered this problem before, & more importantly, solved it?

I think this was mentioned on the old Bachmann message board, Alas.

Hi All,

Tim's completed the triple lapped turnout built in N scale code 40.
Take a look, it's quite amazing.

Dear Friends,

Can anyone tell me where the "flaw" is?

Best, Jack

Hi Jack,

were you referring to the missing track that runs through the switch rails.
It's all explained in Part 1

apparently the Bronx Terminal used removable rails.

Hey all,

check out this scene in N-scale..... or is it real?

Art imitating life or visa versa?

Do you Hand Lay your own Track?
Try this quick quiz....

Thanx very much for your responses.
It obviously pays to "Read between the Lines".

Hi all,
Just a question about MAP.

Seen on a website :
BLi & PCM now have MAP pricing Minimum Advertised Pricing. 20% off RRP.

Does this mean dealers are no longer allowed to "free trade" in the US?

Not satisfied with the difficulty factor involved with building the Bronx Terminal trackwork in HO scale, Tim is now experimenting with it in N scale - Take a look at his lattest entry.

Hi All,

Tim has added an image of the Terminal taken in 1944.
If you ignore the distant background, it even looks like a well made model, especially with the automobiles in the foreground

G'day All,

Take a look at this site.
It is of the Central New Jersey Bronx Terminal.
The trackwork is fabulous.
It has a couple of videos as well.
I'm sure it will look great when it's completed.

Didrik,

The Quick Start guide, the Instruction Manual & the Technical Manual are on the disc that comes with the loco. I don't have it with me at the moment, but the info you seek is in the Tech' or Instruction Manual.

I printed of a copy of each.... So much easier to mark pages etc, & its portable.
