Great job Jonathan, no need to explain. Model Railroading is about tinkering in my book, making something out of nothing, or making a bad runner into a great runner (MDC Shays) Some people like it, some don't, its all about what you want to do. A lot of us like to do all, bench work, track, wiring, scenery, scratch building, loco mods, etc. It helps make you a better, well rounded modeler IMHO.

I suppose this is OT, but since it concerns the G&D I'll report here that I'm absolutely tickled that I finally managed to score a couple of the Roundhouse G&D "tribute" kits, an Overton combine and a drover's caboose. I'm looking forward to their arrival. :)

this thread has just gone beyond hopeful discussion for me.... diesels...... :-[
Never happened on the G&D, only in Varney ads. One pic John took shows a group hanging a diesel salesman from the trestle. The G & D was steam all the way! ;)

I had the opportunity to view some salvaged structures and artifacts last year from the G & D currently being displayed at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum.

Hi Ray, originally they were colored a light brown with a wash. Several months later I decided they were the wrong color so I used a fairly strong mixture of India ink and alcohol. That scene is still unfinished but thanks for the comment.

What would be your opinion of a re-release of the 50-Ton Climax, WITH improved gears, or a 3-truck Heisler, namely, Cass#6. Or a 2 and/or 4-truck Shay. The Heisler could be done in Cass#6, Meadow River#6, Bostonia Coal and Clay Products#20, and undecorated. Two truck shay Could be done in various logging schemes and undec. Four truck shay could be done in C&O#1-4, Western Maryland#900, 5,
Southern#4000-4001, N&W#56/156, WVP&P#13-14.

I already have a Bachmann 2 truck shay (it's quite simple actually) ,a small 2 truck Heisler would be nice, I have the last run of the Rivarossi version, its a sweet loco.

Freezing the shafts is a great suggestion, sometimes the easiest solutions escape me.  :P

Not an easy job by any means ,I did the conversion when the NWSL gears first came out. After I did it the gears started slipping in the shafts, I had to apply some ACC to hold them. I lost track of exactly what happened but those parts are in a part box and I ended up getting new trucks (when they were still available). It has been my experience that the newer gears don't have an issue, I have 3 shays, all now running with the factory gears.  There is a guy on the web that will do the job for you if needed....

No worries, it is a tough job, especially with my fat fingers, personally I wouldn't have a problem with letting someone else do it so I can do things I enjoy.

I found a link....

http://www.pacificcoastairlinerr.com/bachmann_4-4-0/wipers/

Print it out or save it to your hard drive because this website is up and down, mostly down.

Although the instruction is mostly about adding wipers to an IHC, it shows how he was able to add a decoder by extending the height of the tender, same could hold true for the Bachmann version.

It can be done, I believe a forum member here (Rich) has done it. If I'm wrong Rich I apologize but remember seeing a project on a forum. Maybe I can find it and link you too it.

HO / Re: HO 80-ton Shay radius
May 18, 2011, 05:09:55 PM
I have a 15" radius on my layout, my 3 shays and 3T climax negotiate it just fine. It happens to be on a 4% grade and sometimes I'll string line my lighter hoppers. But as mentioned, ask a local LHS to run it on a 15" radius before you buy it.

It has been a while now since Bachmann released this engine. I have been watching this site for any news that this model is subject to the high failure rate of the previous Climax, the three truck version.

The previous Climax was the 2 truck version, the new climax is 3 truck, do you have this backwards?

I have a 3T, so far so good.

It works great on large locos with tender pickup but I advise not to put it on an 0-6-0 or the 44 ton locos for example because as mentioned it insulates the wheels from electrical pickup.

I was thinking of trying it on a 44 ton Glad this was brought up I guess I'll just have just continue to MU it when it needs its.
Hi Joe
I did remove the bull frog snot from my 44 t, as mentioned, adding some weight is a much better solution for the small locos.
