Stephen,  Do not get a new chassis for those old C cell battery R/C 4-6-0s.  The chassis for sale is not compatible with it. Get a more modern 4-6-0 use my chassis ID method to insure you are buying a Version 5 chassis. Any version 5 chassis is OK.  If you are buying on Ebay be sure there is a photo of the bottom of the chassis and the ID description fits.

Hi again,  I do believe the dimensions are to the outside.   Since you already have a G Scale layout you should be able to get the actual dimensions by measuring a circle and adding the length of the straight tracks provided in the set.

Take care,  Bill

Hi, The set is very old and there are no parts available.  Unless you can find a way to improvise you are out of luck. Some members I know just used another 4-6-0 to pull the circus cars.  some also painted the locomotive and tender black and parked it by their engine house as a non operating display item.

Hi Arron,

I found that Kadee coupler springs will do the job.  As for the truck if you have all the pieces I found that JB weld worked very well.  Another possibility would be to use a tender truck from another model.

Take care,

The latest chassis would not have the drum or the long brass strips because the new electronics uses an optical sensor.  on some of my older chassis chuff was spotty, and when I opened them up I found that crud on the drum was preventing good contact.  A good cleaning took care of the problem.  The optical sensor should be much more reliable.

wraujr,  All well and good, but remember the purpose of my ID descriptions are to be able to identify what the item is from visible features.  I started the the chassis identification list many years ago so that fellow hobbyists would be able to understand what they were getting when buying on ebay or at a train show.  Many sellers do not even know what they have.

In all cases my chassis id descriptions indicate the electronics inside by observing the visible features without having to open up the item to find out.  I believe that they currently do that, but I am open to nuances just the same.  One of the reasons the electronics board in the Standard line 4-6-0. does not have a an output to the rear headlight is because the Standard line 4-6-0's never had an operating rear headlight.

When I look at the two chassis in the Bachmann Catalog  (links below)  I can't be sure they have the new swing or drawbar style front truck, so I am reluctant to add electronics to the description of the V5B chassis. Bachmann does not make it easier  with their poor description of many of the catalog items.

Having said all that you are correct in saying that the original V5 chassis are sold out. All the new chassis being sold on the Bachmann site seem to be V5B.  My V5B chassis id includes the newer drawbar front truck. You are also correct in saying that electronics changes are important on the Standard 4-6-0.  I appreciate your input.

Over the years I have been burned more than once about one of my description of Bachmann locos and rolling stock.  Because of that I am as careful as possible and confirm everything before adding to my chassis identification. All I need is several foto confirmations of the latest chassis showing it with the both new electronics and the new drawbar style front truck.

If any forum members who bought this chassis direct from Bachmann can confirm it has both please let me know.

Thanks,  Bill

So how sure are we that the chassis has the drawbar front truck.  I have not seen one yet.  I am ready to identify it as a 5B.

Well Pete it would be you!  I will look forward to your photos and opinion as to what it really is. If is stock I will have to change my info related to identifying it.  Bill

Mike if you bought it please post all you can about it when you get it. You can also PM me if you prefer. I want to see if there was some kind of intermediate chassis just before the V7.  The plugs, firebox door, seem to be v7, but the front truck seems to be earlier, and if it is a v7 it would be the first with Stephenson valve gear.

Forgot to mention the picture on the box does show the Walshearts valve gear while the loco inside has the Stepenson gear supporting Greg's theory. When the mystery is solved if ever I will so note in my database of Bachmann large Scale items.

I see the seller has offered $45 off, $370 is an amazing price if my theory is correct. I'm almost tempted to push the button but I would have to repaint it.  $370 is a decent price for a loco with V5 these days.

Oh the fun of speculating. LOL

My theory is the loco and tender are correctly identified as V7, even tho the valve gear is different than the one shown in the catalog.

I say this for the following reasons:
I have been studying my database and so far can find no evidence the 1225 road number was used again with the  latest NP&S paint scheme.  The paint scheme on the subject loco was first used in the sets made for Sam's Club.  The idea being to brighten up the red color.  What I do see is the locos were made with both Stephenson and Walshearts valve gear.  I also see many mistakes in the catalog pictures not reflecting the actual item, some involving the valve gear and others the incorrect road number, and some with a different paint scheme on the actual product.

I agree the possibility exists, but makes little sense.  I agree the valve gear question is puzzling.  Having said that it would not be the first time Bachmann used a picture that was not of the actual product.

I have been following Bachmann Large scale since 1998 and crazier things have happened.  Still hoping Pete can get pictures from the seller.

Hi All,  At this point I feel the loco and tender are V7.  The V7's first appeared in the 2020 catalog and still appear in the 2025 catalog except for the 91801 Flying Rio Grande.  The 91805 NP&S 1225 Christmas V7 as shown on the box end in the sellers listing checks out with the catalog listings.  The idea that the chassis might have been changed in some way seems virtually impossible since an older chassis would not have compatible connectors with a V7 tender. I say virtually impossible because some one of us might try it just for the hell of it. It will be interesting to see the photos the seller sends to Pete.
