Howdy, I'm new here.
I recently purchased a Red Comet off of Facebook marketplace for $50. I've been searching for info and maybe parts which led me to this thread.
Loco Bill, thank you for your list. I knew it was old but not that old. In my research I've read that there are five or six generations of big haulers. So by your list that makes the Red Comet a first gen? That helps a lot.
It runs ok, but the drive gears are noisy. I opened up the gear box and added some gear lube, they were dry. That quieted it down a bit. But they have a lot of play. I suspect the only way to get it to run quiet is to replace all the gears. Knowing what generation it is gives me a starting point in tracking down specs, parts and diagrams.
Other than the noisy gears, the train set is in great shape. It even still has the accessories: telephone poles and signs. The box is trashed though, it's been used a lot.
Again, thanks for the list. I'm just getting started in g scale and will likely refer to it a lot as I purchase future sets and locomotives.
