Hey doc,  The c-19 Chassis is available in the parts store.  It is complete with the motor and gearbox.  The motor an gearbox do not seem to be available as a separate item.

Hi Laroy, I do not believe those trucks were factory lubed, nor were any Bachmann rolling stock factory lubed. Bachmann locomotives did have lube in the gearboxes but never on the running gear.

I always lube everything with plastic compatible lube, even all metal gears are in a plastic gearbox.  I have used Bachmann plastic compatible lubes as well as Woodland Scenics, and Labelle.

Large / Re: Large Scale 4-6-0 Chassis Identification
April 03, 2025, 05:59:45 PM
Hi All 95 % of the photos are just screen grabs from the Bachmann Parts catalog and other Bachmann sources.  As Greg correctly states these are not helpful in chassis identification.  As can be seen in my chassis identification list, some versions are identified with variations not visible in a photo of the bottom plate of the loco. Any photo without specific written descriptions are virtually impossible to identify. I am too lazy to add photos to my chassis identification list,  If someone wants to send me photos of a 4-6-0 chassis and it can be linked to the narrative I will ask Bachmann to reopen it so I can add photos contributed that are useful for the purpose.

I started the chassis identification with Wade Colyer as we tried to build a database of all Bachmann Large Scale Locomotives and rolling stock.  We were largely successful and Wade eventually lost interest.  In the last  four years I have been lazy about adding new items that Bachmann is introducing, especially the reintroduced Aristocraft products. I am not an employee of Bachmann Industries, just an 85 year old Bachmann large scale railfan doing the historical info since no one else did, not even Bachmann.  I did the chassis identification list to help fellow modelers avoid buying older Bachmann Locomotives with early problems as Bachmann developed improvements. The version 5 chassis came out in late 1999 and has proved to be tough and reliable in the years since.  In most respects all the new versions since the introduction of the version five chassis are variations of it.

As most of you who know me, I am a guy who has just enjoyed helping other Bachmann Large scale fans when ever I can. One day you might notice that I have disappeared from the forum and wondered about it.  Most likely I will be up in the Big Rock Candy Mountain with my railroad brothers.  If there is someone who would like to take over the maintenance of the data bases, and the sets list database, as well as the chassis identification info please contact me in a private message.  There must be many of you out there who could do a better job than I can. I am just an old soldier who made things up as I went along and with the help of Wade Colyer. I became the official unofficial Bachamnn Large Scale historian over the years. I do appreciate the help from many Bachamnn Industries employees over the years. I only know  most Bachmann employees like  Inside Track by their Forum name not their real name. The Bach-man I do know and he was super helpful over the years.

First of all Fred that was a fantastic response, thanks for that.

 Now HI DB,

Your set was made in 1996 and is about 30 years old now.  The locos are chassis version three, which had gear problems.  Freds recommendation to get Chassis version 5 or above is spot on.

There are decal makers that could reproduce the lettering and numbers, but it might be expensive.  Bachmann made an add on coach and a full baggage.  If you found more coachs on ebay they will all have the same number.

I really don't know of other Bachmann locos that match the Southern Railway paint on yours.  Some of the specialty paint makers might have some that match.

AS for the broken front truck on one of your locos Bachmannn makes a replacement that will will work, but your description of the damage is pretty severe.  I would recommend junking it for parts for other locos, especially if is not a version 5.

Best I can do for now, have fun with your trains!

HI Battleflail,

Your best bet is to do two "saved searches" on EBAY with email notification.
Set it up under the G Scale section of EBAY  Do one on the "set number 90036", then another on "Polar Express"
Probably many of these sets are sitting in attics with the Christmas decoration boxes, but you never know when one will come up.  Bachmann never made  a full baggage or a combine in Polar Express livery.  If a set does come up I would suggest buying it even though you will get a second locomotive and an extra observation car. Then you would have a four car consist with two coaches and two .observation cars. Who knows you may get lucky and find someone who breaks up a set and sells the pieces separately.

Enjoy your set, and good luck finding more cars.

Extra Info
I have written book with all the Bachmann set in it but which no publisher was willing to publish.  Anyway I have posted the part of the book covering the Polar Express set for those who may have an interest. I did not include the pictures and the EBay sales info is mostly out of date.

Set 90036 The Polar Express 2000
Licensed from the book

Set Type: Passenger    Original MSRP: $380.00
Set theme: Fantasy Christmas      Actual Discount Retail: $175
Production:  Regular    Ebay Price range: $200 To $700
Introduction Date:  2000    Ebay Average price: $300.00
Catalog Dates: 2000 to 2002    Out of Production By: 2002
Track:  12 Curved    8 Straight    Power: Electric Power Pack
Locomotive Type:  4-6-0 PE #1225    Fuel Type: Coal
4-6-0 Chassis Version:  5    Car 1: Coach Polar Express #1985
Car 2: Observation Polar Express #2000    Car 3: None

No matching Polar Express full baggage or combines were made to go with this set.

Introduced in 2000, The Polar Express was based on the classic children's book of the same name.  By the time the movie came out Bachmann was no longer licensed to use the Polar Express name, or box graphics.  As a result the set being out of production, became highly prized, bringing very high prices on Ebay.  A year after the movie was released, prices on Ebay were back down to about $275.00 to $300.00.  I do feel that the green and maroon passenger car colors are very classy.  If one considers Bachmann sets collectible, this would be a must have set.  This set was in the catalog from 2000 to 2002.  The locomotive in the set does have the latest smooth running version 5 chassis.  It is doubtful that this set will ever be introduced again.  None of the pieces in this set were ever available separately.  The original MSRP was $380.00 and the discount mail order hobby shop price was $175.00.  The set still shows up on Ebay usually around Christmas time, but is rarely offered.  The price range on Ebay is from $200.00 to $700.00 and the average price is about $300.00.  Since I have so few sales records of this seldom offered set, the prices noted should be considered accordingly.

End of Book info.

Yes Bachmann still makes track. You may have sticker shock on track prices as well. Give Robbie at RLD hobbies and he ca give you the prices.

The $99 for the EOT is the Bachmann the suggested MSRP. the street price will be much lower.
I am sure you can get a much lower price the EOT at discount mail order hobby stores like RLD hobbies.
