Hi brownbr,
I can assure you your idea of using a piece of tube over the split gear, or universal coupling, will work very well.
I have had problems with components splitting on a number of models, and as I am in Australia, it is not easy to get replacements. I have used K&S aluminium tube to put a small sleeve over the hub of the split part, as the aluminium has a little bit of give (strechability) as you force the ring on. Fortunately K&S do a tube that is the ideal size for this job. Be sure to force the ring on square, and use a tiny bit of good quality super glue in the split, and on the hub as you put the ring on.
I also use a TINY amount of super glue on the shaft as I put the split part back on. This lot of super glue is best put in the hole in the part, not on the shaft. This allows the excess glue to be pushed out the end, rather than along the shaft and into the bearing, where it will cause you more headaches.
This not a particularly difficult job, so hopefully you can solve your problems this way.
RGS Goose.

What diameter tubing are you using? Also, does this require the removal of the driveshaft from the truck?  I have 2 Climaxes with this problem and would like to get them repaired ASAP (and I will be going to the TCA show in York next week, so that's the perfect place to get the materials/tools needed).

On30 / Christmas 2012 cars?
April 13, 2012, 01:02:27 PM
At the TCA meet in York back in October, I stopped by the Bachmann booth and inquired about upcoming On30 Christmas cars. I was told that you might be re-releasing the eggnog car and/or the reindeer stock car.  Any updates on this?

The problem I have had is not with the gears inside the truck but with the connection between the rear  truck and the driveshaft. There is a joint that  connects the shaft to the the truck. The sleeve that fits over the end of the gear shaft that protrudes from the truck has cracked, and the drive shaft becomes disconnected from the truck. Placing a ring around the sleeve is a cure for this. I know this is a common problem, I understand that others may have had cracked gears inside the truck, but I have not had that problem.

I have a climax which has experienced this problem (my second so far)...can this be fixed after the fact? If so, how? Do I disconnect the driveshaft and slide/crimp the ring over the sleeve? what kind of ring, etc?

I, too, have the fruitcake car. I also have the gondola, boxcar, stock car, and hopper; I was not aware of the eggnog car until you referenced it. Am I missing any others?

Nope, those are all of them, to my knowledge. I wish I could get my hands on the egg nog tank car and stock car.  I haven't seen any on eBay, but if anyone knows of someone who might be selling theirs, please let me know.

The product catalog shows http://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/products.php?act=viewProd&productId=3461

There may be more.

I don't know if this is new or not.

eric

The fruitcake car was released last year, I have it.  I was at York last week and was told that there was no car this year, but they may have one next year.  In the meantime, I'm still trying to find the eggnog and stock cars from years past...

If I remember correctly they did about five or six years ago... I'll have to keep mine for the year "built" when I get them out next week!

have you been able to check this out? i've got the boxcar, reefer, gondola, and hopper w/ load.  the reindeer stock car would be a great add if i can still find it.

Just as a matter of prototype correctness, the Bachmann model is the "Russian" Decapod, so-named because they were being built for Imperial Russia.  When the revolution came and the czar deposed, there were a couple hundred of these locos still state-side.  The USRA comandeered them and distributed them to many US railroad as part of the WWI war effort.

The GW/Strasburg No. 90 is a "stock" Baldwin decapod from the 1920's and is a considerably larger loco than the Russians.  Some similar locos ran on the Gainesville Midland RR in Georgia into the late 1950's or early '60's.

I've found this out in my own research, however I've yet to find a stock Baldwin 2-10-0 that I can use.  Besides, this one will pass the 2ft rule for me.  If you know of any stock Baldwin's, please let me know.  Also, who is a good supplier of the builder plates, etc?

HO / Unlettered 2-10-0 headlight location
October 26, 2010, 12:48:13 PM
I'm seeing conflicting images on the internet on this...Basically, I want to model the Strasburg (ex Great Western Railway) #90, a 2-10-0.  The (stock) images at this site, and others, show the headlight as being on the front of the boiler; while I've seen other images of the model on other sites (like this ebay auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/Bachamnn-Spectrum-2-10-0-Decapod-DCC-sound-N-I-B-/300485169215?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item45f64fd03f ) that show it as being on top of the boiler, as SRR 90 has it.

Which is the true placement of the headlight on this model (Bachmann p/n 84301)?

Just an FYI, I spoke to a Bachmann rep at York and they said that the production samples had just arrived, so it would be a couple of weeks.  Will it be released in time to be running under my tree?
