N / Re: #4 turnouts producing shorts when paired
February 20, 2020, 12:20:11 PM
greetings.
first off you have to remember that all kato switches are dc powered
secondly that they are powered by the direction they are thrown in otherwards when in a straight through position the spur or siding track is dead.
as i use all kato track&switches  ,the kato power pack converts ac to dc for me for the switches only.
to control my trains i use an nce power cab.
i think your best solution would be to use a BACHMANN switch or get a converter from dc to ac for the kato switches, you will only need one for both switches.. hope this helps with your short problem.

i have had 4 of them and only one  runs decently, and that was after going to spookshows web site to try &quiet down the gear noise.i gave up returning them to bachman
and just selected another loco of same value. the keeper unit still runs fine just noisy &is dcc. i guess its the luck of the draw when buying. i see the large maryland site has several for sale on their website. good luck and depends how bad you want one and ability to put up with some noise.

my  situation is that some yrs back i gave all my dc trains to the one son whom followed me with the joy of trains, but is now dying of cancer and as i turn 79 in april i have decided to give my layout to the chatham rail museum as they are looking for donations. it is n scale and when i constructed   it ,i made it to come apart in sections, plus it is all kato track&wiring .so while i still have my faculties could assist in setting up.at least this way younger folks might want to pick up the hobby after visiting.i know when i was a lad i used to what the trains for hours at my local hobby shop and of course had a gramps that was an engineer for the CNR

N / Re: Short occurs in turnout track

kevin perhaps you should invest in an NMRA track gauge so you can check your wheels to see if they are in proper gauge, quite often you will find that the loco or rolling stock wheels are out of gauge and adjustment.kato has a neat little re-railer track that encompasses track gauge &spacing as well as wheel set .it is kato part #24000.very cheap & easy to use.all the other info above is also a good starting point.myself i use kato track and most of my locos are bachmann, and i too use nce power cab.i have had to adjust some of my engine ;s drive wheels etc as the odd one would like to climb the switch frog. not hard to do using a pin vise or small c clamps.trust you wil be able to sort out your problem.

like gator humpy says ,not going to happen, best way to make it happen for your personal needs is to do what SUPERTURBINE does and go to shapeways.
he has been doing this for years now by fitting these shells on bachmann frame and running gear, and wow he has made some impressive locos..Mark from spookshow  knows of his talents as i am sure many other forum members here also. inputting a new product out their it has to have legs  to sell a lot to make profit returns. no legs no model.what i don't understand is why they won't do a rerun of the heavy mtn. which is a marvellous loco and many many people have pleaded for.you can't even find them on evil bay.but there is hope ? they just re released the lovely old connie with sound & the light mtn. to arrive soon. just hope they improved the pulling capacity compared to the heavy mtn.keep the ideas coming in, maybe some will come to fruition. but my 78 ys of age doesn't hold much time for me.

in regards to the one that doesn't run ,did you try to see if it would run  on dc or do a factory reset first. perhaps its a bad decoder.ias hard as these are to find, i would try putting in a new decoder in.aslo in my experience i have found that setting cv-2 vstart from 10 to 0 makes all the difference in slow speed control &running. .if you do decide to dig into it  check out mark's spookshow , he gives a good example of what you need to do reguarding  disassembly. these are quite nicely detailed models and it is highly unlikely we will see a rerun for many yrs.what is strange many of us have been asking for a heavy mtn for yrs to no avail. also you are quit limited to what you can do with those old lentz decoders,so you would be far ahead to up grade your decoders for better programming and running access. i have started some time back upgrading my decoders as i i am liking the addition of adding sound to my layout. hope this helps you out and am sure others will chime in also.

 to the bachmann
i see that your china based parent company mfgs HO scale with some beautifull 2-8-0,'s mikados and mountains .but my interest is in n scale &would like to purchase these while in beijing or shanghai while there. i already have some hobby shops via google and translation, but cannot quite understand bachmann china's site in regards to scale.would you possibly have an answer,so when there in late may&early june ithat i could venture forth in my pursuit of obtaining the above mentioned locos if made in n scale. they would easily be a  nice addition on a n. american road.

General Discussion / Re: traction tires
February 02, 2018, 10:02:05 PM
i understand your frustration, i too had a need for traction tires, fortunately for me a fellow forum member stepped out and sent me some spares he could afford to part with,no charge. in the interim,i found a product at home depot called plasti-dip$6.98 for 14.5 fl oz. it works as good as BULLFROG SNOT  for $25-30 dollars for a very small bottle.you use it the same way in the application bye applying with a toothpick or small detailed tip paintbrush. plenty of videos out there on youtube. PLASTI-DIP comes in a few colors but you can get black. also get the dip  and not the spray. i have used it successfully on a number of locos
and it did the same for me ,but at a a1/4 the cost of snot. hope this helps your situation .

General Discussion / Re: traction wheels

len he did mention 0-6-0 and 2-6-0 but no gauge ho or n. i checked and there is no stock for these and has been that way for mths. as i needed some for my 10 yr old connies. a wonderful fellow on this forum sent me a xmas present,no charge from fla to do all 4 of mine..instead of using $30 bullfrog snot you could use PLASTI-DIP $6.95 at home depot for $6.96
it comes in a small bottle, and you can get it in various colors.you apply it the same way as bullfrog snot.it was developed for coating small tools to stop hand slippage. does it work? you bet it does ,presently using it on BLT E8 & KATO 2-8-2
also a good rule of thumb is not to push these locos ,when putting them on the track,as that is a sure way to have to re tire them . hope this info helps .
