I grew up with model trains as my Dad had worked for both Pennsy and Santa Fe. So when I was young we used to ride downtown and watch trains at the crossing in town. The first train I ever rode on was a steamer up at Strasburg, PA. To this day Strasburg is my second home. My Dad used to work with steam engines when he worked for the Pennsy, and even though I don't have anything against diesels, steamers are my thing  ;D

Rob,
You are right, it's ver addictive! My wife and I used to model HO, then one year we bought a set for under the tree, that's all it took. Now we kitbash and scratchbuild rolling stock and engines, the possibilities are endless.
Welcome to the world of large scale, and enjoy the fun  ;D

Hi Rob, and welcome to large scale  ;D

I think the turnouts are very close to the same size as the curves. We use them over at my Fathers suspended layout, but without driving over to visit, I don't have a way to get you an exact measurement.

You can find extra pieces as well as turnouts on Ebay all the time, so picking up extra's won't be a problem.

Just remember, if you have plans of running your trains outside, you CAN'T use Bachmann track, it's indoor use only and it WILL rust......fast! :o

good luck

Glenn,
Sorry I can't help with the sound install, but are you talking about a 2-6-0 or the 4-6-0? In your other post, you were referring to the anniversary loco, that one is a 4-6-0. If so, maybe that could help you find some info from someone who has done one of these.

Good luck  ;D

Actually this was answered on your other post. The Shays are designed to take tight curves and inclines. They will take your curves, but look much better on wider curves. Also, in your other post, you referred to the Shay as "G" scale, it's actually "F" scale as it's 1:20.3 and not 1:22.5.
It gets a bit confusing with all the different scales, so that is why Bachmann has decided to just call them "large scale"

You won't regret this purchase as the are great engines  ;D

Theft, I cant's stand it  >:(    Even at your house, you try and have something nice and you have to worry about someone taking it. I've been on the recieving end of theft, and it's like being violated.
The EBT is a wonderful RR, and a true piece of history. Now that this "trash" has been convicted, and the EBT has the rail back, maybe they can make the best out of a bad situation.
True, the rail was cut, so it's now not usable as future rail use, but maybe they could take the cut pieces and sell them as a fund raiser like they did with the coal from a couple years ago. They sent a letter verifiying the coal and where it was from, I've made a display box with the coal, letter and a EBT herald. Shipping would cost a bit, but hey, if you were already there, nice reminder of your visit.

At least he was caught and is going to pay his dues.

Doug,
I agree with Kevin, I have also had great luck with applying over a factory finish. After I add the decal, I do add on a clear coat finish to protect it.

Good luck

General Discussion / Re: ballast

The reason you don't want to have any metal parts in your ballast is because they could magnetically get pulled into the motor or running gear of your locomotive. And getting metal caught up inside moving parts would be bad.

rubiranch,
since you are doing a inside layout, you'll be fine with the Bachmann track. You can pick it up cheap on ebay. We have an indoor layout that has two loops, one is 54 ln ft, the other is 47ln ft. They are suspended from the ceiling, and with running a cleaning car once in awhile, it is still running great. It's been up now for at least 5 years.

Good luck

Tom,
The Megasteam is what I use, and they do have alot of different scents.
I would recommend their products.
