Large / Bachmann Shay Cylinder Repair
May 17, 2015, 11:33:41 PM
The Bachmann two truck Shay (late model) was locking up .The timing gear for the drive unit had part number G811x-OZFO4 (the small quarter moon looking piece) missing. My fix was to remove the tiny retainer screw and insert a .040 dia by about 1/2'long brass wire through the screw hole. Put a tiny drop of CA glue on the point where the brass wire passes through the inverted question mark piece. Then cut the wire snug with a pair of wire cutters.
I did this for all 6 units. The replacement repair does not show to the viewer when the steam engine is reassembled into the Shay!

My U Joint fix:  Pictures at photobucket:

Purchase "Raboesch" Super Styrene .060x.100
Part # MID 51052  at Hobby Town.   Other shops will also carry Styrene shapes.
Wrap the styrene around a 1/2" rod or drill bit to get a round shape.
Cut the formed styrene circle a little long
Fit the styrene circle into the Bell Mouth of the U Joint. Now file the mating ends for shape and fit.
Fit the 2 Metal "Yokes" into the Bell Mouth. Next install the styrene circle and check the fit. The 2 yokes must be free to move. Remove the styrene circle and apply 4 small drops of "Super Glue" to the inside of the Bell Mouth. Avoid the metal yokes!!
Reinstall the Styrene circle.  Let the glue cure. Paint Black. Reinstall on your Shay engine.

It has taken longer to write these instructions than to make the actual repair.

My fix is to go to a hardware store and purchase one foot of clear plastic tubing. About 1/4 inch ID. Cut a piece of tube the same length as the plastic axle.
Find a center punch or drift that is slightly larger than the inside of the plastic tube. Shove the drift into the plastic tube. Soak in very hot water about 3 minutes. Remove plastic tube from the water and the drift. Now quickly start slipping the tube over the plastic axle. You will have to push HARD!

The end result is a plastic axle with a outer tubing reinforcement.

I have used the above system to repair the "Risers" that accept the retaining screws for the bottom motor plate in the 4-6-0 engines.

Large / Shay Universal Joint Replacement
June 29, 2013, 01:01:47 AM
My 2 Truck 38 ton Shay has the front universal joint broken. Has anyone found a replacement or manufactured a Universal joint yourself?
I ordered a replacement FRONT Drive Shaft from Bachmann. They sent the rear shaft. Bachmann web pages shows the Rear Drive Shaft is out of stock.
My best guess is that the parts are miss binned  or miss identified. The FRONT and REAR drive shafts are different and not interchangeable.

Thank You to all that replied. We have ordered two CH90035. The $30 per unit is an excellent price.

Our Garden RR group has six Bachmann 4-6-0 engines. That chassis will repair the "Royal Blue' and give us
a spare for future use.
The "Royal Blue" is used by grandchildren and has seen some rough use. Now we will be able to return that engine
to service.
I don't believe that the children will care that the lower chassis is black instead of blue.We will see how it looks when it is back together

Thank you again.

Large / Re: Adding weight to "Annie"
May 19, 2011, 10:53:12 PM
I left out an important bit of information!!
I belong to a Garden RR group and we have several Bachmann 4-6-0 engines. I have found that
the engines will pull 3 to 4 unweighted cars with ease and not damage the gears.
The problem is when a grandchild is running at top speed and reverses the engine.  Split Gears!!
My personal "Annie" has the "Barry's Big Trains" upgrade. This is an excellent product, well engineered and built with Quality!!

What I need to do is add additional weight to the converted "Annie".
I Like Kevins idea about using Bondo and mixing it with the bird shot.
Does the mix get hot enough during curing to distort the plastic in the Bachmann engine?

Large / Adding weight to "Annie"
May 19, 2011, 01:49:57 AM
I have been given 17 pounds of bird shot and would like to add about 3 to 4 pounds to my "Annie"
At the moment I have filled a couple of pill bottles with the shot and added them to my engine cavities.
I am worried that over time the plastic pill bottles might leak and get into the driving gearing.
What I would like to use is a low temperature resin ( or other product) that I can mix into the bird shot and
pour into the engine cavities. ( At least the cavities that will not leak out the mix!)
Any thoughts?
