On30 / Re: New Locomotives?

sigh...some people seem a bit touchy, and since when are personal OPINIONS uniformed assumptions?

if you like the direction Bachmann has taking with On30, more power to you. But I'm not going to just buy what ever Bachmann builds and thank them for the opportunity if I don't like what they are building...

put me down as another modeler that has lost interest in On30 in part because of the esoteric choice Bachmann has made with their new products...that is not the only reason, but I can't remember the last time I was excited about a new offering from Bachmann after it was announced :-/

I just wish they'd offer us something new that was a bit less quirky than what they have been.

BTW-Keep making the short cars. There is clearly more demand for them than the 28"ers

how do figure that? I know everyone likes new stuff, but I don't know how one can say there "clearly more demand" for the unusually sized cars over more typically sized cars?

I'm guessing you've never seen a K-27, model or otherwise..."huge" is not a word I've ever heard used to describe one, they longer but aren't a ton bigger than the Bachmann 4-6-0

K-27's look just fine on 36" and 31 1/4" gauge rails

if we are dreaming, how about the Surry, Sussex & Southampton 4-4-0 from the Mar/Apr Gazette?

I would love to buy one or two Bachmann On30 T-12s or F&CC (RGS) 4-6-0s...but I'm not gunna hold my breath  :-\

(and as nice as the ET&WNC 4-6-0 looks, it is about 10-20% larger than almost all the other narrow gauge 4-6-0's. My 4-6-0 actually is a touch taller at the cab than my MMI K-27. And the 1:22.5 4-6-0 make a much better 1:20.3 model of the SP 4-6-0's...)

The 8-18c/d 4-4-0/2-6-0 still sounds like a nice idea.

Rock On!
~Dusten

agreed.
logging and mainline rrs ran them and they ran from the 1870s to the 1940s, with modifications. Everyone should be able to justify one of them on their layout.

Not if you regard your line as 30 inch gauge, nothing very close to the 8-18c/d seems to have run on a 30 inch gauge line anywhere in the world. Bachman's existing OF ON30 4-4-0's a typical 30 inch gauge 4-4-0.

Hamish

how about this then: the 8-18c/d 4-4-0/2-6-0 would fit in on the VAST majority North American narrow gauge railroads between the 1870's and 1940's?...and I suspect that this being the Bachmann USA website most modelers here fall into that category

nothing against those that want quirky/funky/dinky/odd On30 loco's, but how about something for those of use that want common/standard locos?...maybe even something else ran in Colorado  :o

Large / Re: power supply help

in case anyone is interested, the issue was the power supply.

we are an IT support company so we have a lot of old technology stuff laying around. I adapted an old laptop power supply that puts out about 9 volts with a 3 amp capacity and the train is running great now. The speed of the loco is a touch faster than I'd like but the boss is happy, so I'm happy.

Thanks Joe, but the maintenance isn't an issue.

Coming from an HOn3 background I'm a bit obsessive about making sure everything is clean and well lubricated...(those 80's-90's vintage HOn3 locos were pretty darn finicky)

so any suggestions on a power pack? I haven't had much luck finding anything on the interwebz today, other than the starter sets stuff....since throwing some of the boss's money at the problem is easier than having to spend a few days troubleshooting in addition to my regular tasks ;)

for my personal large scale projects I have decided on battery power so I haven't spent much time looking for track power stuff...

Thanks Bill,

my initial thought was a breaker was tripping in the power supplies....we run the two freight cars in the set and substituted a combine for the caboose. Unfortunately I won't be able to get it out or set up for a few more weeks so I can't do any actual tests

So, again, coming form the HOn3/On30 world my thinking was I needed a higher amp power supply for the bigger loco, Is that a reasonable assumption? Maybe something like the Aristo 1.8 amp unit?

I kinda wished we'd had a chance to get a Barry's Big Train drive...mostly because I wana try building one since I'm looking at building something in my backyard now :)

Large / power supply help
October 18, 2012, 12:13:49 PM
Hello guys,

I am wondering what a good power supply would be for a Big Hauler that needs to run for 6 or 8 hours a day?

here is a little background

I am a relative newbie to large scale, but have been railroad modeling since the early 70's and I have a good bit of "intellectual" experience in large scale but very little hands-on...anyway at work we got a Rocky Mountain Express (#90034) a few years ago to run around the Christmas tree and since I am The Train Guy it has become my job to keep it going.

The problem is that the loco stops running after 1/2 hour or so, we shut off the power and then after a while it will run fine again.

I have swapped out the track for Aristocraft track and have tried a MRC Tech II power pack. Neither change made difference.

Thanks
Mike

I would like to see a passenger car reasonably accurately scaled to 1:20.3, but with the amount of detail in the big haulers to keep the costs down. The buyer then can super-detail to their needs or leave as is.

Thanks for asking for our opinion
Alec

I think that would be my preference too, or an optional drop in interior

On30 / Re: Future of ON30

I heard that story too, but I suspect that wasn't the primary consideration...especially given the outside frame 4-4-0's fairly similar wheelbase to an 8-18A

it is probably just my cynicism coloring my POV, but if there were more 8-18A's that were found east of the Mississippi or south of the Rio Grande we may have seen a Bachmann On30 model of one........

while we are one the subject...the other thing that seems to put off a lot of people is the limited run nature of a lot of the large scale stuff. If you see and R/C car or plane in a shop or a magazine and next year you decide you want one, chances are pretty good that want you want will still be there...

I have a Eureka and Palisades 4-4-0 on a shelf, and I've had a couple guests ask questions about it and wonder where they could get one...unfortunately I have to tell them "maybe on e-bay, they don't make them anymore"...who wants to start a new hobby, or in a new scale and not know if they can get the rolling stock they want when they get the time and money to build their garden railroad?

I would like to see the Southern Pacific diesel or one of the ten wheelers with a whale back tender.

actually SPNG is what I primarily model, but I wasn't gunna say anything  ;)
