Quote from: Grapevine Flyer on April 01, 2024, 01:15:01 PMThank you. I don't visibly see a bachmann decoder. It just looks like a whole circuit board. It has a 21-pin connection, but I'm getting the impression I can't just attach a decoder to that 21 pin connector (is that for a proprietary sound board?). Is that true?

True

QuoteAlso, these 2 speakers that came in the loco won't work with Blunami? I can swap them out if necessary - just want to confirm.

Only can be used if CV 128 Master Volume is set to a low value. I don't recall the value at which speaker damage will occur. Phone Bachmann Service Dept for the value (don't be surprised if they do not know).

QuoteI was hoping I could just pop a decoder on the 21-pin connector, but it sounds like I need to remove all electronics from this train in order to use a Blunami. Is that true?

True

To use a Blunami decoder in Bachmann On30 Whitcomb 50-ton switcher:

  • Replace the factory installed DCC decoder (made for Bachmann by SoundTraxx).
  • Replace the factory installed speaker with one compatible with the Blunami 2-watt audio amplifier.

Will there be a HOn30 Discussion Board added or will the On30 board be renamed Narrow Gauge, to include On30 and HOn30?

Bach-Man,

Specs for Speaker:

  Shape: Round
  Size:  30mm
  Frequency Response: 490Hz - 10kHz
Power: 0.5 Watt (Nominal) 1 Watt (Peak)
  Impedance: 8 Ohms

Or what?

Short answer -  NO!

Long answer - A Bachmann E-Z Command Control Center does not support programming by user supplied CV number.  Thus, you cannot program a value of 8 to CV 8, which causes the decoder to reset all its CVs to their default value. (In Digitrax DCS52 jargon, WRITE a value of 08 to CV 08 )

However ---------- Using a Bachmann E-Z Command Control Center, the follow procedure might work

Carefully follow the procedure REPROGRAMMING DECODERS WITH PREVIOUSLY ASSIGNED DIGITAL ADDRESSES for locomotive's digital address is a number higher than 10, page 3 of the E-Z COMMAND Setup and Programming Instructions.  This procedure automatically changes a few of the decoder's CVs, which may get the locomotive to respond as it should.

Click Here for E-Z COMMAND Setup and Programming Instructions

Suggest you put away the Bachmann E-Z Command Control Center and only use the Digitrax DCS52 Zephyr Express

Bachmann non-DCC turnout wiring and powering

Use any power supply adapter with output 16V 1000mA. Either AC or DC output will work.  Example: a wall wart type power supply.  With two turnouts, an AC or DC power supply output of   12V 500mA may work.

For wiring and other ways to power

Caveat --- Not just any DC power pack can be used.

A locomotive with a dual mode decoder (i.e. can use DCC or DC power) only  operates well in analog mode using an electronically regulated  power pack to  supply filtered DC power. An older rheostat-style or pulse power pack will result in erratic operation thus must not be used. If the DC power pack has a pulse power switch, it must be turned off.

It is labeled as "Output : AC16V 1000mA 16VA"

Wow!  I must admit, Bachmann is still sticking to their main theme "First time, Beginner's, Kids under a certain age, as the company's focus.   The EZ companion smart interface would ...in my opinion, move the company from that beginning point into the intermediate users.

Again I believe Bachmann is missing a profit making area.  Why, because every kid that I know of has a smart phone or better.  I'm the obsolete one... still using a flip phone and the E-Z command ;)

Thanks for sharing.

Ralph,

Bachmann has tried the smartphone area in a broader way with E-Z APP product line.

Trivia

After Bachmann for good reasons (no, I will not list them as information was provided to me off the record) discontinued the E-Z Command Walkaround Companion they announced the E-Z Command Smart Interface. It was never produced.

an aside. . .
I was just about to post the link in the following when I saw Ralph S update.

Click Here this begins a Bachmann video at the relevant point saving time watching needless info to answer question and provides key tech info to avoid a gotcha.
