HO / Bachmann ALCO S4
January 14, 2012, 12:39:22 AM
I wanted to thank Bachmann for my new wonderful ALCO S4 model. I got mine today, and spent a good part of the afternoon running it. It sounds and runs great, and it is nice to see a company offering a great quality model with sound I could afford. Thanks again, looking forward to running my little SP ALCO again tomorrow. :)

Oh yes, Precision Craft does say it will make a GS-4. I spoke to them in 2006, and they said it "was right around the corner". Kato just released a beautiful GS-4 in N scale, but that does not do me much good. Great news for the N scale guys though. ;D

Over saturation? There is not one accurate SP GS-4 model out there in HO scale that is not brass. I have been waiting and waiting for someone to make a good GS-4, and I am some excited about this model. Finally, a model of 4449 I can run on my layout.

Here is some good SP GS-4 news. Walthers is showing they will have the new Precision Craft Models SP GS-4 in April. The sound version sells for 449.99, and the non sound version sell for 379.99. Kind of pricy, but I will pay it to finally get an accurate GS-4 model.

I feel your pain with this model. Mine now resides in my parts box. When I first got it, the colors didn't bother me that much. In fact, I thought it looked pretty good. But when I put it on the track, all that changed. It would hardly move, and make terrible noises. I took it apart and saw that the main drive gear was chipped. This model is a perfect example of a CHEAP CHEAP model in terms of quality. I still cannot understand why someone does not make an accurate GS-4 of good quality. I see KATO is going to make on in N scale. Like has been said many times. The 4449 is the most photographed steam locomotive in history, but there are no decent models made of it in plastic. To me Bachmann could have started from scratch with the GS-4 and make it in their Spectrum series. Now start with a model who origins are from the 1970s! Just pure junk, no other way to put it.

I have an Athearn Genesis Big Boy, Challenger, and the new FEF-3. All run very well, and are well made.

Thanks, I tried the link you gave, but they say they are not in stock, overdue from Bachmann. Walthers shows they don't have them yet either.  :-[

I am a huge fan of the SP GS-4 locomotive. I agree it is hard to beat the SP Daylight paint scheme, but I'll take a GS-4 in just about any paint scheme.  :)
