I have one of these Big Hauler 2-4-2 locomotives.  I am having trouble with it kind of "bouncing" down the track.  A search on this forum leads me to believe that I have the same gear issue as discussed in this post.  There was a suggestion made to go to the NSL site to find a replacement gear.  Has anyone had recent success finding Big Hauler gears on that site?  I am not even sure what I am looking for when I get to the [Gear Menu] over there.

Do you thing Bachmann will make more of the brass axle /gear sets again?

We have a Spectrum Consolidation in need of a new gear and axle.  I see a replacement in the Bachmann parts store but it's shown as sold out. Model: (G813X-AXELBG) Will they be available again?  What happens if the are no longer available?

At one time Bachmann was selling 96275 Large Scale 2 Axle Motor Blocks.  These were replacements for Aristocraft  FA, Eggliner, and U25 Motor blocks.  I see them available at other online stores but I can't seem to find them on the Bachmann site.  Are these still being produced and sold?  If not do you think they will start making them again?

I figured that had to be the case since it came with a DC train set.  We actually have 3 of the speed controllers but only one of the odd cables that connect them to the track. They have a 3.5mm plug on one end and some sort of track clip on the other.  Does Bachmann sell a replacement cable?  If not is there another place to at least buy a cable with the 3.5mm plug.  Not even sure what type of plug it is.  (stereo?,Mono?, other?)

Thanks Loco Bill.  The locomotive is an Aristocraft FA with 2 motors.  We had a MRC Trainpower 6200 but it just started to act up so I need to find something to use for a train show this weekend.  I will bring the Bachmann 1 amp along as a backup.

I was just looking at the power pack that comes with it (AC1601000).  It lists the output as 16v AC.  I was expecting DC.  So is there a rectifier in the speed controller that converts the voltage to DC ?

We have a 16 volt, 1 amp transformer and speed controller that came with a Bachmann Big Hauler set.  Would this be capable of running an Aristocraft Engine with a pair of Aristocraft passenger cars for 6 hours?

RRConcepts sells 3 models that will do reversing operations.  The Station Master, The Station Master Reverser, and the YardMaster.   I am using the Station Master Reverser and it really works great.  It has two distinct modes of operation.  Sensor mode uses sensors and train magnets to gradually slow the train down and stop.  Reversing mode uses timing to slow the train down and diode bridged gaps in the rail for the stopping points. You can set the acceleration and deceleration rates and dwell time. You can do a LOT more tricks with the other models but the StationMaster Reverser is the best choice if you only plan on a back and forth operation. They just added a new feature that in addition to the gradual startup and slow down the train can creep in and out of the station.   Here is a link to the web page.  Note:  Study the instructions very carefully.

It's a cylinder that contains the piston and spring.  The cylinder has "extensions"  on either side that have the holes for mounting.
I had contacted the parts department and just received a reply that they do not carry that part.  Have to buy the entire motor block.  -ouch!

Thanks again for trying to help me with this.  I am not sure if I am describing the assembly correctly.  It consists of the piston and a spring that I cannot see that is contained in an odd shaped plastic housing.  The housing has a sheet metal gasket that screws onto the back.  That is where the wire is soldered to.  The housing is held to the inside of the mudguard with two tiny screws.  It looks like the entire housing was meant to be replaced.  I have never seen that style on any other car.  But of course I am new to all of this.
  And yes the other piston assembly on the same side also failed.  -

I have the piston assembly off but I am not sure how to get the piston and spring out of it.  Do I just yank it out with brute force?  Seems there is a hard stop keeping it in.  And if I wanted to replace the piston and spring are they the same size as the ones that Bachmann uses in the truck frame of some of their other rolling stock?

Thanks for the reply.  The spring is kind of weak but it still contacts the wheel.  I electrically tested the piston assembly by clamping a lead to the exposed piston. No current is reaching to the wire in back of the assembly.    Can you recommend a conductive lube that is really conductive?  That seems to be my only option right now.
