Quote from: CMO99 on April 15, 2024, 06:27:57 PMDo you think I should purchase a more powerful transformer?
If it runs when you push, then it is not the transformer. (A better transformer wouldn't hurt.)

I am assuming this is a Bachmann Christmas set, with a 4-6-0 loco and you are using the regular Bachmann transformer? Those locos have been continually improved over the years, and you may have an old one with only a few wheel pickups. Take a look underneath and see if you have a rubber plug between the rear driving wheels - that's an access for greasing the gears - and also check the front truck for wires, which are an extra set of wheel pickups. Let us know which you have.

Are you using the original 'steel' rails that came with the set? Two problems here - they rust fairly quickly and the corner radius is very tight, causing wear on the wheels. For long term reliability, a wider corner radius will be a great help - 4' radius / 8' diameter is recommended.  LGB 16000 track is about 4' radius, or you can use flexible track.

You did oil all the axles before you started running it?

Mike's (Railman63) comments above are probably your next step. Clean the wheels and the track and see if that improves things.

Large / Re: 2-6-0/4-4-0 Axle & Gear Availability
April 12, 2024, 02:24:50 PM
Quote from: Greg Elmassian on April 05, 2024, 06:20:57 PMHow can that gear be universal? Aren't there 2 different axles/gears?

if so, the gear alone clearly cannot be universal.
It certainly isn't universal. As far as I know, the 2-8-0 axle is longer for the outside frames and counterweights. There's a replacement axle with a brass gear.  There is no long axle for the 2-8-0 with the new "D" gear.

The 4-4-0 and 2-6-0 axle+gear, as pictured in my post, works on either loco.  The gear, with the "D" shaped hole, is NOT compatible with the old axle which is knurled.

IMHO Bachmann should not be selling the gear on its own unless they also sell the axle.

Large / 2-6-0/4-4-0 Axle & Gear Availability

Mr Bach-man/Administrator,
The axle with gear has been out of stock for months. There are still lots of 4-4-0s and 2-6-0s that need a replacement.
Model: 813XX-13:

And I notice you sell just the gear - some poor guy tried to fit it on the old knurled axle. I don't think we have any of the new "D" gears failing yet, so no-one has an axle with a flat for the new gears. Suggest you delete this:

Quote from: BillC on March 14, 2024, 12:48:58 PMIs this the same motor assembly as some of the HO motor assemblies?
I think so, but the brush assemblies are a little different. They tend to melt, so you have to do some fettlin' to make them fit. Check out this thread:
https://largescalecentral.com/t/re-motoring-a-bachmann-4-wheel-trolley/78214

The problem is the convoluted way the brushes connect to the pickups. This pic shows you the differences.

There are 2 Spectrum 'g-scale' 2-8-0s. The older one is the outside frame version, and the newer one is the D&RGW C-19.  This pic is the older one.

Bachmann Parts is the usual place to find motors, etc. I did not see one listed for the older 2-8-0, but you could try a phone call to the Parts Dept.

The gears are the usual problem in the 2-8-0. Are you sure your problem is the motor? Can you hear it spinning when you apply power? If so, there is a new brass gear in the Parts store:

Quote from: trainman203 on December 23, 2023, 10:55:53 AMThe dim light is telling you that very little power is getting through to the motor.

After years of inactivity, every point of electrical contact on the locomotive is oxidized. I'm not familiar with that exact model, but certainly the wheels need cleaning.
While this is all true in general, the Bachmann 4-6-0 is a little different. Yes, clean the wheels! If you have a rubber lube cap over the rear axle then pry it out and add lots of model grease. If you don't have a lube cap, and the bottom is smooth, then support the loco upside down on some styrofoam or similar blocks and remove the bottom chassis cover (big screw at front must come out too.) You may find brass strips attached to the cover that rest on the bearings, or (on even older models) you may find plunger-type pickups in the chassis that bear on the backs of the wheels.  Whichever type it is, clean and lubricate the wheels bearings and wheel pickups.

There's a page on the Reference docs section of thi site that has the 4-6-0 exploded diagram.

Quote from: BurtL on December 24, 2023, 11:12:48 PMwhat is the purpose of those wires?  They don't look like they serve as a part of the power take up but I don't see anything they connect to.
(A picture is worth a thousand words?)
The front truck has two metal strips along the inside of the plastic truck frame which the axles pass through and transfer track power to those wires. They should pass into the chassis above the truck pivot area. Someone may have cut them?
The metal strips are separated by 2 nylon pieces pushed in from the underside. One has an arrow pointing forward (in case you might want to put it in the track the wrong way and cause a short circuit.)

If you want to stop the truck derailing, after you have bent the pivot arm so the truck has all 4 wheels on the track, take out the 2 nylon pieces from the underside so the metal strips are all loose. Remember which is forward and scratch and arrow somewhere on the plastic! Then apply some tape to the inside of one of the metal strips so they can't touch and create a short circuit.
With the nylon pieces out, the truck will become very loosely suspended and will stay on the track.

Quote from: Jarimiah on December 21, 2023, 01:28:50 AM3- I think front light is a led. A 1k resistor should probably work fine right?
I think the 4-4-0 is of the era where Bachmann has all the resistors on the PCB, so it won't have one on the LED itself. If you are reconnecting it to your Blunami, a 1K would be appropriate.

The 4-4-0 DCC and DC wiring diagrams are on the Bachmann website.

Quote from: Loco Bill Canelos on October 21, 2023, 04:24:05 PMMickey,

Since you have both the new trucks and the old trucks is there any way you can tell the difference between the old style and new style???  I know the new metal ones have the lube plugs, but did the old ones??

Bill
Greg has notes on his webpage:
https://elmassian.com/index.php/large-scale-train-main-page/motive-power-mods-aamp-tips/bachmann-motive-power/shay

Basically, the fewer screws visible on the bottom of the truck, the better!  Version 1 36 ton had 8, Vers 2 had 6 screws, and the Vers 3 38T had 4 screws.

Large / Re: Rail Truck, 4-6-0 Annie and 4-4-0 Mogul
September 25, 2023, 12:34:29 PM
Quote from: crangdahl@earthlink.net on September 19, 2023, 03:05:19 PMI am looking for the motor (#8812A) with worm gear for a LS Rail Truck; the axle connector on the center, two part drive wheels (not a solid axle) for a recently purchased new 4-6-0 Annie with metal side rods: and the hand rails with 2 posts each for a Spectrum 4-4-0 (or 4-6-0) Mogul.

1.  Rail Truck Motor. Standard Kader part [parent of Bachmann]. I bought one from an HO loco.  See:
https://largescalecentral.com/t/bachmann-881-motor-railtruck-trolley-etc-fix/80018

2.  Axle connector for the Annie center wheels.
https://estore.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=69_623&products_id=11238
Did yours break? Can't you use a plastic tube to replace it?  Also see:
https://www.mylargescale.com/threads/bachmann-4-6-0-center-axle-sleeve-cracking.91183/

3.  Handrails for 4-4-0 or 2-6-0 with 2 posts/stanchions? Available in Parts:
https://estore.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=69_139&products_id=4842

If those aren't the right parts you need, post some photos of your problems so we can identify them.

Quote from: rrneer on July 24, 2023, 11:04:08 AMI have a Backmann G scale Christmas train with knuckles. I want to add a hook/Loop so I can use some of my LGB cars.  Any ideas?
Hook and Loop couplers are readily available online. The Bachmann Parts store sells them.
https://estore.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=69_75&products_id=567
Or you could just ask - many folk have a box full that they have removed from cars in order to install knuckles.
(P.S. LGB cars come with knuckles too!)
