HO / Re: Why do the brits call
June 11, 2008, 02:35:49 PM
Why do they call elevators lifts? Or the bathroom the loo? Who knows why they do the things they do. Just kidding ;)

Dialect is influenced by environment and history. I grew up in Ohio where we called Pepsi, Coke, Mt. Dew, etc "pop". When I moved to San Diego, Ca I had to start calling it soda.

Whatever you do, just don't ask them about haggis. Trust me. :o

HO / Re: Bachmann Product Quality

I agree Bob. Bachmann produces just about everything one could want for a model railroad. Sure you can pay a lot more for brass, or a lot less for toy-like. But, good, quality, products with excellent customer service is where Bachmann stands out.

No I do not work for Bachmann, I'm just a fan.

You have to put some time and effort into laying your track. After you connect two pieces and verify that the rails are in the joiners, you must crimp them tightly with a needlenose plier. If the joints are not smooth,  then a mill file is in order.

Bachmann products are comparable in quality to all the others being manufactured today. There is an old military adage that goes "The more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in battle." Apply this to out hobby, "The more work you do in tracklaying, the fewer the the problems during operating."

Keep at it.

The items I referred to are Roundhouse Products, 40' gondolas. The the threaded stud where the coupler attaches breaks off with the slightest force. It is just very cheap pot metal.

Order received today, 10 days after I placed it. It was complete, well packed and in good condition. Too bad the Roundhouse gondolas I bought a total crap!
I would not order from them again, due to the misleading ways they answered my questions.

Ok friends,

I placed a little test order with this place. I like to give everyone a fair shot. Here are my results so far:

1. Placed order for 4 items on 4/29/08.

Atlas HO Scale Unpainted Figures (24)
(Clearance) Walthers Trainline HO Scale Ready-to-Run Gondolas
(Clearance) Model Die-Casting HO Scale 40' Gondola
Woodland Scenics Realistic 2-1/2" to 6" Pine Tree

With the $12.00 USPS Express Mail shiping the order came to about $60.00

2. On 5/1/08 The order status page says that all items are allocated and order is processing.

3. On 5/2/08 I receive this email from a Bea Schweder of Internet Trains:

"Order 136205- the woodland scenics item just came in today- your order should ship on Monday. I am sorry for the delay. You will get an email with trcking info when it ships.

Yours Truly,

Bea Schweder

(714) 256-9401 (Outside North America)
M-F 10am-4pm PST (1pm-7pm EST)
Fax: (978) 945-7766"

4. Called them yesterday 5/5/08 and spoke with Bea who said that they were still waiting on the trees. I told her that I received the email from her stating that the trees were already in. She said, "Oh. Then I guess your order will ship today. But the $12.00 you paid was only a deposit for the express mail."
I told here to ship it standard FedEx then.

5. Received this email from the president of IMT today 5/6/08:

"Hi Paul,

I do apologize for the delay.  The reason for the delay was that the $12 shipping deposit did not cover the shipping cost for this order.

The actually shipping cost was $13.34 plus $3 for a total of $16.45

Since this was not relayed correctly to you, I have gone ahead and had them ship your order and I will cover the $4.45 that was short.

Tracking info has been added to your order and should update sometime this evening.

I hope this acceptable to you.

Sincerely,

Steve Guccione

"

Hmmm. A week is not too bad to get my order out. But I kept getting a different story.

This isn't an answer per se, but a means to an answer.

Put your meter on the wires, check the voltage. If it's positive, the red probe is the hot wire. If  you get a negative reading, switch them.

Next check out LEDs online, I think the cathode is is short leg, but check. Be sure. Now see whether the hot wire goes to the anode or the cathode.

I though I was the only person left who had even heard of LOGO. I learned Pascal as a freshman @ Ohio State. BASIC, C, C+, and C++ I taught myself. Like you Woody, now I could care the least bit about Visual This and Stuio That!
