"If at first you don't succeed, throw it in the spare parts box"

Love it and how true it is...Lack of experience and tool costs are issues here...Good news is, I'm in no hurry...little by little...More questions surely to come...

Thanks all...

I was advised several times about the use of the quarterer tool...It's one learning step at a time. Next step after pulling the wheel is to get the gear off and the new one correctly installed? It's all new to me...Any advice on that part?

Thanks...

HO / Making Your Own Wheel Puller...
March 18, 2024, 09:14:02 PM
Just saw a You Tube Video where an individual used a "Superior Tool Faucet Handle Puller" to pull an engine driver wheel off. Available at Lowes for $16.00 and probable cheaper on Ebay or Amazon. Looked liked a very simple operation abd one that I understood.

Has anyone made their own affordable wheel puller? As I have mentioned before I have several 63" and 52" 4-6-0's that need new driver gears...I need to at least attempt to repair myself or they will remain in their respective boxes until my estate sale....

Next question "Is the driver gear removal a problem?" What could I expect? Someone said that rod alignment also needs to be considered.

Any advice to help me appreciated.

Thanks,

Interesting...how did you make out 686 Shooter? I assume your wheel driver gear was not worn down or teeth condition was not an issue?

I love this hobby....Probably need a gear puller too...Let's see that's about $50-70 just in tooling.

Hey All...

I really need several of these...found this on NWSL Site. Can anyone confirm this is the correct gear for this model? It would be so appreciated. If not...anyone have specs? Then my next question would be do I need any special tools or are there instructions on how to replace the gear...I'm at the point of no other choice other than making this repair attempt.

Spur Gear, 0.4mod x 20 Teeth x 8.6mm OD x 0.110" Face x 3.0mm Bore, Delrin
Compatible with:  Bachmann HO 4-6-0 ten wheeler axle gear

Thanks,
Russ Daley

Thanks for the reply 686Shooter.

I believe and confirming with parts that the Chassis Assembly is a direct replacement for the Spectrum Model 82301. I think I'll just buy the complete assembly which will surely pay for the aggravation I'm sure to encounter if I try to replace the gear.

I have several engines with a worn drive gear...the one located on middle driver. First off...Are they available separately....part number... vendor... etc...And if so how much talent is needed to even replace the gear...looks to me it's quite a job. Couldn't find any instructions/videos on web. I saw the gear is part of an assembly available from Bachmann Parts...I don't mind a challenge but I believe this is beyond my talent and probably be best to purchase the assembly and forget the aggravation.
Thought I'd ask? Also have one that needs a motor...I think I can handled that one?

HO / Re: Spectrum 2-8-0 Front Light Issue

I guess this Chapter of Learning is almost closed. I have another 2-8-0 which was also torn apart (same issue white metal chassis failure) so I connected full voltage to the light and it didn't blow. It remained connected for 5 minutes. So for now I'm going to be content with the incandescent lamp. And thank you Jonathan for confirming a few questions I had regarding the wiring of a LED. Thank you trainman 203 also...

OK...next project fix...double crossover in a reverse loop....any takers?

Thank you for reply...

The Locomotive was a "New" DCC Ready Model Spectrum 11410. Over the years I removed the circuit board and ran it until somewhere along time the white metal chassis crumbled apart. I recently purchased a replacement chassis from Parts. I'm far from being an electrician too but I do agree it's worth the chance to remove the resistor and see what happens...But then again, I'm not a good mechanic either and I dread tearing these locomotives apart for fear of not getting them back together. I've managed a degree of success and learned a great deal so far with any teardown I've challenged but just trying to eliminate another chore....

Thanks again...

Progress...

I wired a 16 Volt Incandescent Lamp into the circuit with the resistor and the lamp did not light. I bypassed the resistor and the lamp lit. This tells me that the decoder and CV Values are correct. All I need now is a warm comfort reply telling me that there is most likely an Incandescent Lamp installed...remove the resistor...study Ohms Law, button it up and move on...
