My replacement motor arrived in the mail today,  one week after I ordered it.  The motor has the cog wheel and flywheel mounted on its shaft, and includes a new jackshaft with cog wheel and worm.  I just need to solder the two wire to it and put it in place.

I just saw this thread for the first time.  I have a 2-8-0 with the same problem.  At first I thought it was the belt, and I was told that the 2-8-0 / 2-10-0 belts are the same as the 4-8-2 belts.  I ordered the 4-8-2 belts and they are NOT the same.  (My order arrived in 4 days).  Looking deeper, I noticed that the cog wheel on the motor shaft was spinning freely.  I put the project on the back burner for a while, because I have other locos I can use, and just ordered a new motor on Monday.  I don't think Bachmann sells any other belts that will work for this loco.  I looked for belts from other sources (McMaster-Carr, etc.) and was not able to find anything that would work.  I once read that there was a computer repair kit that had the same belt in it, but that was many, many years ago.  I have no idea if those kits are still available, or where to get them.  The old motor still works fine.  Maybe I can use it to remotor an old Athearn or something.

The parts e-mail is parts@bachmanntrains.com.  They might be able to help you more.

The part department shows they have the motors in stock, and they only cost 4 dollars.  Contact them, a replacement may be easier to get than you think.

The 4-8-2 drive belts came in the mail this morning.  Nice fast shipping by the parts department     I took the 2-8-0 apart.  The belts are not the same.  The old belt is wider, and a larger circumference, with fewer, larger teeth.  Both belts sime to be equally stiff, so I dont know if the new belt will stretch to fit over the shafts or not.  When I opened the loco up I found my old belt intact.  After poking around, I find the cogged puley on the motor shaft is spinning on the shaft.       Okay, I just tried to reassemble the drive with the new belt, and could not do so.  The belt needs to be a larger circumference.  now I need to see if I can get a new motor assembly from Parts.

According to the parts page, the 4-8-2 belt is a different belt....different diameter and different number of teeth.  I dont see any info on the 4-4-0 belt, although, from the photos, it does use a belt.  I have never taken my 4-4-0 apart.

I have been unable to find any belts from any other sources.   I seem to remember someone once saying they were drive belts used in computer drives.

Try incorporating time into your crew's day.  There are fast clock programs available to use your computer as a fast time clock.  I use 4 to 1 ratio to run a 12 hour workday in 3 real hours.  It takes time to run a railroad.  Everytime a loco couples to a car, the brakeman must connect the brake hoses, cut in the air,  and knock off the hand brake. On my railroad it takes 2 minutes.   Then the brakes have to be tested.  First they must be applied and a brakeman must walk the train to ensure the brakes are released, then the brakes are released and the train must be checked again.  You cant just couple up the loco and go.  On my railroad a brakeman can check 3 cars in 1 scale minute.  I also keep track of where each crewman is.  If everybody is at the front end and a switch needs to be thrown at the rear end, we are going to sit here for a while, while someone walks back there.

HO / 2-8-0 Drive Belts needed
March 14, 2014, 07:47:09 PM
I have old Spectrum 2-8-0s from the ffrst couple runs, and the drive belts are wearing out.  Parts Dept doesnt have them.  Any ideas about what I can use for replacements?
