I'm not sure what size you need but the windshield washer pumps for just about any Japanese car built in the last 20 years will work on 12 vdc. They are pretty small. They should be pretty cheap at pull it yourself salvage yard.

5 Favorite? Right now it's a three-truck Shay because I actually got to drive one for a short time at Roaring Camp.

They have an "Engineer for the Day"   program that allows you to ride in the cab and drive one of their steam locos. It' the most fun you can have with your coveralls on.

For all Hesler and Shay fans, you can see and ride behind one in central California at the Roaring Camp and Big Trees NG Railway in Felton, CA. They have a webpage. The have one Heisler and two Shays, a 2 truck and a 3 truck.

You can also be "Engineer for the Day" and ride in the cab and atually sit in the engineers seat and drive for a short while. I did this and it was a wonderful and unforgettable experience.

Internatioal Hobby Corp. makes a "Sound Car" in HO. It makes a chuff sound of sorts. It is triggered by closing a switch (actuallly a plated spot on a truck axle). You should be able to come up with a similar triggering method on your loco.

If you will be satisfied with just chuff sound, the car is only $20.

Testors makes decal paper in clear and white. They also make a kit with a
CD program to make the decals. My locaal hobby shop sells the kit. They are printed using an ink jet printer.

Thanks for the replies gentelmen. The more I hear about the "Quasinami" and other comments on the Bachmann sound systems, the less I like about them. Another option seems preferable.

I did get sound on my 2-truk Shay by canibalizng the sound card form a circus loco and triggering the chuff with a switch on one of the u-joints. I put 6 drops of thick CA glue on the outside of the U-joint. The idea is to get 6 chuffs per revolution of the crankshaft. I think this would be correct for a 3-cylinder Shay .

This works fairly well for chuff sounds but, no bells and whistles or brake screech.

I was really hoping the Bach Man would replly to the original question. Nothing yet.

Bachmann:

Does Bachmann sell the sound board for the 3-truck Shay? I purchased two of them just before Christmas 2006. I have been told by dealers that I cannot get the sound cards. They want to sell me an aftermarket system for about $250. I hope this is not the only option.

I purchased a Large scale 3 truck Shay before the added the Tsunami sound. I want to add sound. A dealer said this was impossible because Bachmann does not sell the components to upgrade this loco.

Has anyone else had this idea and similar experience?

Can anyone help, or, at least comment on the subject?
