HO / Railroad nails
October 04, 2012, 01:44:23 PM
I was on a road trip to Colorado and stopped at an antigue store somewhere in Kansas. There was a slab of styrofoam with about 50 or 60 nails stuck in it. These nails had numbers formed on the heads. The guy told me they were used by the Union Pacific to keep track of how long the different ties lasted.
As a section of rail was replaced these nails would be put in one or two of the ties in that section.
He showed me a book that also mentioned nails with code letters on them to show what type of wood the ties were made of. He didn't have any of the lettered ones, but said both would have been used to keep track of maintenance.
I paid $1.00 for one with a 43 on it. My birthyear.
Anybody have more info on these nails?????

HO / DCC Wannabe
January 28, 2012, 06:02:25 PM
Just looking thru my December 2011 copy of Model Railroader Mag. On page 74 there's a picture of DCC equipment. It includes a power supply, but no booster..
On page 75 there is a diagram showing what I assume is a complete DCC setup with what they have captioned "Booster and Power Supply".
Now, are the booster and power supply one single piece of equipment or are they two separate pieces?
Also, Once I get the Cab, Command Station, Booster and Power Supply, and a DCC equipped locomotive, is there anything else I need? Like additions to my existing track that I have been running DC, or other equipment?
    Thanks in advance,

HO / Track cleaning
September 01, 2011, 01:49:17 PM
I read instructions on this board about track cleaning. They call for rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth..............Can someone give me an example of a lint free cloth?
I'm a has-been woodworker and the lint free cloth I picture is called a tack cloth. It's coated with a waxy element to pick up sawdust. I doubt that's what anyone would recommend for cleaning model railroad track.
    Thanks again,

HO / EZ track turnout control (correction)
July 18, 2011, 07:17:21 PM
Does anyone know if it's possible to buy just the DC controller for the EZ track turnouts?
One of mine died. Power is going thru it to the next controller, but not out to the turnout it's suppose to be controlling.
   Thanks,
   Ted
Well, as it turns out now, when I connect that turnout to a different controller, it still doesn't work. And if I connect another turnout to that controller it works fine. So my problem is with the turnout it's self, not the controller. Sorry I gave you half-a--ed information. Should have finished testing before I posted.
Thanks again Kevin & Joe.

HO / Which way does this thing go?
July 11, 2011, 06:24:42 AM
I've got a GP-40 and can't figure out if the cab should be forward or aft. Performance wise it doesn't seem to make any difference. Just wondering which is correct.
    Thanks,

HO / Plastic or metal wheels ???
June 20, 2011, 08:38:04 AM
What are the pros and cons of plastic and/or metal wheel sets. If I change over from plastic to metal is it OK to just replace the wheel sets or should the entire trucks be changed out?
I'm having a problem now with wheel sets falling out of the trucks.
This after trouble with couplers failing, the task of adjusting turnouts and the fact that Bachmann sent this beginner a train set that included a 2-8-2 locomotive with EZ track and 18" radius curves it doesn't like.
I know, I know, "Welcome to the hobby". Just felt like venting a little this morning and I knew you guys would understand.  :)

HO / Beginning scenery ?
April 30, 2011, 05:31:25 PM
Trying to figure out if making scenery, (hills, mountains, a tunnel) is best done on the layout or off site then fixed to the proper location.
My concern is the possibility of the wet plaster cloth trashing my painted 1inch foamboard base during construction of scenery.
I have plenty of screen, some plaster cloth, newspaper for wadding and plenty of cardboard I can make into strips.
I'll feel a lot better about starting this project after hearing from a few experienced RR's
    As always, thanks guys!!!

General Discussion / Catalog abbreviations
April 25, 2011, 05:08:06 PM
Is there a way to tell in the Walthers Catalog or Flyer whether structure model kits are plastic or wood?
    Thanks in advance,

HO / More on couplers
April 11, 2011, 04:45:41 PM
OK, I've learned that I shouldn't always expect my turnouts to perform properly. Is that going to be the case with couplers as well?
I have some couplers with leaf type springs and others with coil type springs on the knuckles. Haven't really been able to figure out which is the problem.
I've gone through all my rolling stock and adjusted the couplers and pins with the height gauge. It really seems more like the springs are loosing tension. But this is all new stuff only a couple months old.

HO / Grades & track length
March 28, 2011, 12:00:26 PM
In an article from Model Railroader Magazine there's a graph and example of how to plan raises in elevation.
According to the graph, in order to achieve a 2.5% grade and the 2 1/2 to 3 inches of clearance in order to run an HO train under that overpass, my calculations come up with a necessary track run of about 125 inches. That's almost ten and a half feet.
However, the example shown with that graph indicates only 50 inches which is just over 4 ft. I'm working with an 8 X 4 layout and am wondering if my calculations are anywhere near correct.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

HO / Not blowing smoke !
March 04, 2011, 04:26:19 PM
My month old steam loco only blew smoke the first couple times I added liquid. I tried disconnecting the remote turnouts in case they were drawing too much power from my power pack. That didn't make any difference. Anybody got some other ideas I can try?
    Thanks, Ted :-\

HO / Atlas turnouts
February 27, 2011, 01:17:38 PM
Can Atlas turnouts be adapted and used with the EZ Track system?
