Thomas & Friends / Small layout plan
March 26, 2015, 03:27:29 PM
Maybe impossible but I'd like to build my grandson a small layout 4'X4'.
I'd like to have 2 circles and be able to switch from one to the other. Will I be able to install enough straight track to take a switch or are switches available with a small enough radius to work in a curve?
Plan examples would be nice.
Thanks

General Discussion / Loco runs in reverse
April 19, 2013, 03:59:06 PM
I recently converted a loco to DCC and all is working well except it now runs the reverse way to the controller. i.e. when the controller is in "Forward" the loco runs backwards.
If I re-solder the red and black wires in the reverse order will that solve the problem?

Thomas & Friends / Any order
April 08, 2013, 04:09:37 PM
To have an easy instal I'm about to throw Thomas's DCC sound decoder into one of the girls and permanently couple them together.  Do they run in any particular order i.e. does Annie always run directly behind Thomas or is it Clarabel? I might as well make it prototypical ;D

General Discussion / Double slip confusion
April 07, 2013, 08:53:17 AM
During the "planning?" of my grandson's Thomas railroad I decided to go with a double slip to get trains from the inner loop to the outer and the reverse. I chose this route because it took less than half the space of two conventional turnouts. Plus the two longest straights on the layout are on opposing grades. This was done to add two features, a tunnel and a grade for helpers to be used.
Trouble is I find the DS confusing and that's before I try to run a loco on both loops simultaneously, I'm thinking an excited 5 year old might get frustrated.
Is there an easy method of remembering which way the switch is thrown as to which way the train will travel or perhaps a method of marking ground throws?
I need to resolve this before I start the scenery as perhaps the grades will have to go. (And that will mean ripping up half the layout :()

General Discussion / Additional/custom sounds
April 04, 2013, 12:51:29 PM
My question is what equipment/software do I need to add additional sounds to my decoders. Where can I find step by step instructions and what's a good source for sounds?
Any and all help appreciated thanks Andy.

Thomas & Friends / No road numbers
March 05, 2013, 05:33:45 PM
Is there a reason some Thomas locos don't have road numbers. In particular Bill, Ben, Emily and Diesel? Also most are 2 digit road numbers whereas Salty's is a 4 digit number.
I only noticed because I am converting them to DCC and using the road number as the address would make it easy for my grandson to call up a loco, just look at the loco and punch in it's number.
I guess I will get busy with decals.

Thomas & Friends / Lights and Whistles
March 05, 2013, 09:36:00 AM
Where can I buy working lights for the HO Thomas range of locos? Preferably replacing the white dummy lights.
Also what can I do to give the locos a whistle rather than a horn?

HO / DCC/Sound whistles

Are sound decoders made that have a whistle or what do I need to record a whistle?

HO / Help I'm lost
March 03, 2013, 08:50:57 AM
I've re-posted this from the Thomas forum as I'm beginning to think Thomas DCC conversions are not that common.
OK so Toby is sitting naked on the workbench, I've removed his shell and his PC board. I'm left with 4 wires which my Digitrax SDH164D Sound FX decoder instructions tell me to attach to the wires on the 9 pin "track, motor and function harness".
That all appears easy but nowhere do the instructions tell me what to do with the 6 wires coming from the 10 pin "sound harness". 2 are already connected to the speaker and 2 to the storage capacitor. All it says in regards to the sound harness is IF (and I'm not) using an external synchro cam to connect it to the white wire.
So am I to assume there are only 4 wires to hook up? It seems too easy.
Any help is appreciated.

Thomas & Friends / Time to convert
February 20, 2013, 07:13:53 AM
My Grandsons layout is finally progressing.
The track is laid, the wiring is almost finished and next I want to convert a steam loco to DCC/sound.
Which of the following would be the easiest loco to convert, I ask as this will be my first conversion.
Thomas
Percy
Bill & Ben
Donald & Douglas
Toby
James
Edward
Emily
Also would you have the twins run separately or as one unit.

Thomas & Friends / Actual Road Name

This is a real basic question but I have to ask, what is the official name of the railway that Thomas runs on?

General Discussion / Woodland Scenics Subterrain system
December 10, 2012, 05:51:29 PM
I'm using this system on my grandson's new layout. I see people have used various adhesives including hot glue, "No Nails" and of course WS have their own expensive version.
My question is what adhesive have members used to install it and how where the results? It's going down on a foam board base.
