Large / "Sound" problem with my new Gen 6 Annie
June 16, 2012, 07:02:42 PM
Took my almost new Gen 6 Annie out of the box today to run it for my grandson only to find I couldn't get it to chuff.  It chuffed once while installing the battery but not at all under power.  Checked all wires multiple times, checked that the switch was "down", still no chuffs.  Any places to look for trouble?  It worked fine when it was put away in late March.  Mike in TX  ???

Today my "new & improved" Anniversary  4-6-0 (Black, unlettered) came in the mail.  First impression:  "Wow, look at all of that metal siderod and valve gear detail".  Second impression:  The new chassis is much more see-through than my Version 5 garden-variety Durango & Silverton 4-6-0.   Third impression:  The new cast front truck rocks!  I ran a test on my 4' Diameter turn indoor track and cranked the Annie up to 100% power for several quick laps and it stuck like glue to the track through the turns.  It pulled a 3 car (1 boxcar, 2 Passenger cars) train at full speed without so much as a hiccup from any of the front wheels.  I couldn't do this with my "old" 4-6-0 without seeing the rear-inside wheel trying to lift off of the track.  My Spectrum 4-4-0 tries to lift the front wheel even at slow speeds on these turns, which is to be expected as it is not intended for 4' diameter turns.  The all-black Annie really looks the part as it is much more detailed and less toy-like than the older set locos.  Now all I need to do is figure out how it'll be marked?  I'm leaning towards the Durango & Silverton name on the Tender and just a 400-series number on the engine.  It looks so much more like the K 28's and 36's they're using now than the Bumbel Bee does.
Count me as a very happy "new" Annie owner.  My only wish is the Bachmann wouldn upgrade the chuff system to 4 per revolution and add a digital steam whistle sound to the board.  Then it would be the perfect 4-6-0!  I tried posting small pics but i keep getting a "folder is full" message??    Mike in TX

Does anyone here know if the 4-6-0 included in the "White Pass & Yukon " set has the new & improved gear set and lead truck ala the separate Annies for sale in the catalog?  I'm riding the fence here, as I have a chance to get one or the other.  Thanks,  Mike in TX

Hello, I am fairly new to G scale modeling and wondered where I can purchase either wet decals or dry transfer numbers and letters to finish off a 1:20.3 boxcar?  I will appreciate any help along these lines.  Thanks,  Mike in TX

I just bought a 1:20.3  20' Oxide Red Boxcar from The Favorite Spot, and when it arrived it had the BLACK overhanging eave roof from item #95355, not the RED roof pictured in The Bachmann catalogs and on their website.  What gives?  I really wanted a small 1:20.3 boxcar with that old-styled roof pictured on item #95370 or item#95327  Mike in TX

i need some actual dimensions for the above item.  I may want to modify it for use as a "buffer" car between my Tender and the rest of my Durango & Silverton Passenger set, ala the small boxcars used on the actual trains.  I have a D&RGW 1:22.5 Boxcar and it's just too big to look right.  anybody got one they are willing to measure?  Thanks,  Mike in Texas

Just wondering why the mamagers at Bachmann don't/won't answer my messages asking where I can get a replacement "Balloon" stack for my Spectrum 4-4-0 which came with the "Diamond" type?  I've left 2 messages since last week to no avail.  also spoke to a gentleman in parts who said he could do nothing for me.  I purchased the Balloon stack for the "Big Haulers" but it's not the same scale and doesn't look right on the Spectrum.  Why no extra parts laying around for purchase for us "High-Dollar" Spectrum owners who'd like to "mod" our engine a bit?  I'll pay handsomely for the "right" stack.   Mike in TX

Hello, my newly aquired Spectrum 4-4-0 (Denver & Rio Grande) has no switch to reverse the polarity behind the boiler front, only a smoke on/off switch.  The train runs the opposite of my Big Hauler all the time.  How do I switch this over so it will run "with" rather than "against" the other engines?   Mike in TX

New to these big trains and very happy with my D&S big Hauler with one small exception:  The "as supplied" headlight is yellow and shows alot of light through its walls.  This diminishes the effect of a bright foeward-facing headbeam to the point that it looks like a yellow see-through pail mounted up there.  Anyone carefully removed, disassembled and painted theirs black inside to rectify this rather glaring defect?  PS: I'd really like a whiter, brighter bulb too.  Mike in TX

I just have to say how pleased I am with my newly acquired "Durango & Silverton Passenger" set.  My grandson and I set it up this afternoon in a back room and we had a blast!  The engine is HUGE, much larger than the 1:20.3 Spectrum 4-4-0 I purchased off of Craigslist a week ago.  Don't get me wrong, that 4-4-0 (D&RG "Rito Alto") is a beauty, and it runs so quietly and smoothly.  It even puts up with the too-tight radius of the Durango set's track.  I am very pleased with the "chuffing" sound from the ten wheeler, but I sure wish it had a real "steam whistle" sound built in.  Now I've got to figure out how to get this whole thing up high around my home "playroom/music room".  I'm afraid that I'm hooked.  Large scale is the way to go for my old eyes and hands.  Thanks, Bach-Mann, for a fine product and thanks to The Favorite Spot, for the great price on the set.  Mike in Mansfield TX  ;D

I'm buying a "leftover" Spectrum 4-4-0 (D&RG version) for a nice price.  This model is "new" but 5 or 6 years old.  Have there been any significant changes to the Spectrum 4-4-0 in this time span?  Is this going to be a problem down the line?  Mike in TX

I just purchased the Durango & Silverton Passenger Set.  I would like to buy the Spectrum 4-4-0 and wondered if it would run "okay" on the original "set" track or will I have to buy 4' radius curves to use it?  Thanks for your time.  Mike in TX
