HO / RE C&O H-5 2-6-6-2
August 25, 2008, 09:16:34 AM
To BnoBob, A little research may solve you dilema. The model Bachmann produce is of the USRA light mallet. C&O purchased about 25 of these locos and the came without backup lights. The backup lights were fitted later in the locomotives service life as tenders were swapped about but as originally recieved they didn't have any. The H-6 class recieved from Baldwin in 1948 did have backup lights but they were ordered that way.
As for the sound well it's a default setting that allows you to tune the loco to suit.

General Discussion / New Steam Loco
August 03, 2008, 08:51:16 AM
The first new build steam loco in the Uk in nearly fifty years ran under its own power. "Tornado" , an LNER A-1 class design, is described as not a replica but the 50th loco of a class that was built in the 1948/49 period.

HO / Twin speakers in 16VC tender
June 28, 2008, 08:11:16 AM
I decided to couple a 16VC tender to one of my C&O H-5's. Some H-6's were coupled to 16VC tenders so I still have a bit of work to do on the loco. I'm using the sound decoder from the standard tender. I'll install this when I make up a new interface and change the LED's to Golden whie ones.
Here are some pics of the speaker install so far.

Chassis opened up for the speakers.

Speakers test fitted.

Speakers mounted and sealed with latex caulk.

Starting to wire up.

End seals made from 60thou plastic card affixed with latex caulk.

When I get the wiring interface sorted out I'll post some more pictures.

HO / Still having problems with "J" class
May 31, 2008, 10:41:10 PM
I'm still having problems with this sound equipped "J" class. I've been through the Tsunami CV's and fixed the ones that don't match the default settings in the tech reference manual. I've reset the motion so the side rods actually run in the parralell plane. I've requartered the second set of drivers which were out and centered the gear on the axle so the wheels are now in line. But the damn loco won't spin it's wheels. If you trap the loco and have the power up full the wheels should slip but they don't they just stop turning and the chuff increases as I would expect. The loco now runs alot more easily and the waddle it has is for the most gone, can't get rid of it completely as it still has to traverse some sharp curves. I removed the chokes off the Bachmann board but it hasn't made difference. I'm wondering if I should remove the Bachmann board completely and hard wire in a new PC board without the DC rubbish for the lights, I'll add resistors for the lights. Any thoughts anyone.  Perhaps MR B can shed some light as this is not as good as the other Bachmann locos or the previous non sound "J" classes I own which are the upgraded version. Maybe it's time to take this off the catalogue and UPGRADE it again.

I have fitted a 1.55" QSI Solutions high bass speaker to an outside frame Baldwin using a Tsunami sound decoder. The recipeint of this loco was quite impressed with clarity of the sound over the old speaker.
This link should take you to the pictures i took while fitting the speaker and the decoder.

I have also fitted a Micro Tsunami to a new 4-4-0 with a 1.22" QSI high bass speaker. Unfortuneatly I got carried away during the install and for got to take the pictures. Maybe I'll remember next time.

HO / Bachmann Kanawah's and sound
May 21, 2008, 08:40:46 AM
I've been fitting my C&O Kanawah's with Soundtraxx Tsunami's. I had used the basic Soundtraxx 40mm oval speaker but I decided to try something new. I purchased some of the new QSI high bass speakers and fitted one undec loco with a pair of 1.1" square speakers and Wow! ;D the clarity of the sound is amazing. I dispensed with the accessory sound box and just sealed any holes in the tender and used it as a sound box . I've just ordered another twenty to retro fit some more locos. Pity they don't make some long ovals  to fit in diesels.

HO / n&W "J' class Poor running
May 17, 2008, 07:07:01 AM
Just purchased a N&W "J" class with sound and it's pretty sick. Basically it hasn't the guts to pull its own weight  never mind a train. I had heard that the sound equipped ones weren't as good as the non sound locos. I tested the lcoco at full power and just gently held on the tender expecting the loco wheels to slip which they don't, they just stop moving. Ohh and it derails on 42" curves, leading truck comes off. Before I start tearing into the loco has anyone had a similar problem. I have two of the non sound/non DCC fitted ones that I bought a few years ago and they perform beautifully, these are the new model not the blue box.

General Discussion / I'm back after a long break
November 19, 2007, 08:56:10 AM
Gi'day from Australia. Some of you my remember me but most. I was member of this board for a few years but took a break from US modelling a couple of years ago to pursue some other facets of the hobby. Well I now have finished that project for the most part and I'm back to modelling the US prototype mainly the Chesapeake and Ohio in steam days and the Southern Pacific before the borg took over. So hi to Steamgene as he's probably thwe only bloke that remebers me.
