Hello Mr. Bach-man!  :)
Just picked up one of the last - run Bachmann LS Climax locos to replace my oldest Bachmann loco - an original-production LS Climax (think I bought that loco something like 16 years ago; it still runs but is a VERY tired old loco).  Bought a Tsunami 2 TS-4400 4 amp Sound decoder for it; this is a screw-terminal decoder, so I'm wiring it through the Jumper PC board supplied with the loco.  Basic functions such as motor control & forward headlight are working fine; with the built-in speaker, sound quality is AWESOME.  8) There are a few items which aren't clear , though; wiring for the backup light (the pinout diagram in the manual specifies J1 pin 4, a white wire, as "Front Locomotive Headlight"); what pin is the Rear Headlight?  J1 Pin 8 is listed as the Smoke Unit; J2 Pin 8 as Cab lighht, & J2 Pin 10 as Firebox Flicker.  The TSU - 4400 has 4 additional function screw terminals; I'm going to research a bit on the Tsunami site & see if there are any specific recommendations for the use of those, but any info your guys might have would be appreciated. 😉

Hi Mr. B.!  ;)

The smoke units in several of my locomotives have died of old age.  :-\ I'd like to order replacement smoke units for my 38-ton 2 truck & 55-ton 3-truck Shays, as well as my 2-6-6-2T Mallet; is the Smoke Unit 2911 (HO/Large scale Universal) the correct replacement?  ???

This past June, while vacationing on Cape Cod, I decided to try to catch the MBTA's new summertime weekend Boston to Hyannis train, the "Cape Flyer", on video.  I own a full broadcast-grade Sony camcorder & set it up to catch the "Flyer" as it crossed the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge, as well as getting video of the bridge being lowered (built in 1935, it's the second-longest vertical lift RR bridge in the world), & also caught a Mass Coastal "Trash Train" (which hauls trash from transfer station to a large waste-to-energy power plant alongside the Canal in Sandwich).  A few days, later, I got an after-dark shot of the "Flyer" about 15 minutes out of Hyannis at Yarmouth Junction.  On either side of the Cape Cod Canal are the Canal Service Roads that the US Army Corps of Engineers uses to maintain the Canal (they also maintain & operate the railroad bridge); they are open to the general public as bike trails.  (I've ridden them often).  About a ½ mile north of the railroad bridge, the line to Hyannis parallels the bike trail.  I don't ride a conventional bike (partially due to some severe knee injuries I've had); instead, I ride a tricycle (but not what most people would think when they hear the word "tricycle").  ;)  My ride is a Catrike recumbent – a very comfortable, low slung "tadpole trike" (2 wheels in the front, one in the back).  It has 27-speed gearing, disk brakes, and with the low center-of-gravity, corners like a Porsche!  8)  (I also have a lot of fun surprising the hell  :o out of 20 year olds on racing bikes with it - & I'm 60!  ;D).  So last Friday, I mounted a GroPro Hero3 on the Catrike frame facing the railroad track, drove down to the Canal (about 45 minutes from where I live, if the Cape traffic isn't too bad), parked under the Cape side of the Bourne (highway) Bridge (where I stationed my girlfriend with the big Sony on a tripod), while I rode the Catrike down to the railroad bridge just as the "Cape Flyer" was crossing - & got a different sort of "pacing shot"!  :) Here's the result:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LL21BrzBzi4&feature=share&list=UU16ll7Zsaf3MDKXajV761UA   ;)  Tom

Large / Large Scale at the York TCA Meet?

Hi, Mr. Bach-man! ;)

-For the first time in about 20 years (!) :o , I hope to make it down to the York TCA Meet next week (even managed to get myself a seller's table, Silver Hall, C-33  :) ).  I noticed by the event calendar that Bachmann's going to be displaying down there; will you be displaying items besides the Williams O-gauge tinplate line?  I'm also curious to know if there are likely to be many Bachmann Large-Scale dealers there as well.  (One of the 82899 2-6-6-2T Logging Mallets  8) is at the top of my shopping list  ;D - with one of the 88799 Long Cabooses in 2nd place, the new 1:20.3 log skidder in 3rd....  (you get my drift!).  :D  Look forward to seeing you down there! ;)

For those of you in smaller scales who aren't familiar with some of what's available in Large Scale, BOTH locomotives are live steam  ;D , independently radio controlled (this was true doubleheading - I had a visiting uncle of mine controlling the second engine - we had to coordinate speed & direction on both locos, which was the reason for all the "Go-ahead-&-back-up!" instructions!  :D ).

- Bachmann locos also work well for this  :) ...

   Don't know if you'd remember, but I happened to mention that at the Springfield, MA show back in January that I picked up a used Large-Scale Climax (the Pardee & Curtain #6 version) there at a VERY GOOD ;D price! 

Tried it quickly when I got back home, it ran when I applied power; since I had other "irons in the fire" ;) & hadn't converted it to DCC yet, it sat quietly on a shelf.

Earlier today I did a bit of work on the garden railway (on vacation most of this week); we just had the roof re-shingled on our house over the last several days, so I had to strip ALL the structures off the railroad in the "drop zone" :o nearby.  After putting them back, I did a little trackwork on ironing out some trouble spots.  I ran a quick test train with a 2-truck Shay earlier, & all looked well.

Late at night (remember I'm a "second shift" guy ;) ), I noticed the Climax sitting kind of "forlornly" :'( on the shelf & decided to give it a more extensive track test.  Put it upside down in a work cradle to lube it, found a good amount of fresh grease in the gearboxes when I removed the lube plugs, so I just lubed the valve gear & put conductive lube on the pickups.  Didn't have a DC power pack immediately handy (remember I run DCC), so I grabbed a small 12 V. gel-cell battery & brought it out to the garden railroad.

When I hooked up the battery to the rails, I found out I got a REALLY good buy! 8) - It just glided off down the track smooth & silky! :D  The smoke unit & all the lighting (including the "firebox flicker") worked great as well.

Since it had the original Bachmann couplers on it (& all my other rolling stock is either Kadee or Accucraft couplers), I looked for something for it to pull; noticed a couple of brand-new 4-wheel wood dump cars I had never really run earlier.  Brought them out & coupled them to the Climax, & let the short train run quietly around the railroad for about an hour. :)

Watching it run prompted some thinking; I know the emphasis lately has been on bigger locos the last couple of years (i.e., the 3-truck Shay, the K-27), but some really small locos would be nice too, both for those with limited layout space, & as small tight-space switchers on larger layouts.  (My original Climax now serves as a dedicated "mine switcher" on my mining branch.  ;) ).

Accordingly, here's a few suggestions -

Do a new, "up-to-date" run of the Climax (DCC / RC-battery ready, metal gearboxes).

Produce some of the smaller prototypes from the ON30 product line in 1:20.3.  :)  I think the little T-boiler Shay would a major hit 8) (I know I'd go for one! ;D ).  The tiny 0-4-0 & 0-4-2 Porters & the little 4-wheel, side-rod Davenport diesel I think would be major hits as well. ;D

Large / Status of my parts order

 Mr Bach-man, wonder if you could do me a favor...

A bit over 2 weeks ago, I placed (or tried to place) an order for some Large-Scale Shay parts.  If you remember the video I had posted on the 3-truck Shay shortly after it became available, a few weeks after that (about Feb. 12, 2007), the 3-truck Shay developed a serious  :o valve gear jam (it actually locked up the entire drive train solid! >:( ).  I finally traced it down to a couple of small plastic parts that hold the Stephenson links against the driveline eccentrics; they had fractured & one had  gotten itself tangled in the U-joint at the front end of the engine assembly. :(   I had posted a detailed description of the problem on Mylargescale.com at the time, here's some pictures from it:

The second is a close-up of the broken part (I'm calling it a Stephenson link retainer); this shot is viewed from the backside of the driveshaft:


I had my oldest Shay (Pardee & Curtain #11) laid up on the bench at the time waiting for me to replace a bad DCC decoder, so the parts were 'borrowed" ;) from it.  This restored the 3-trucker to operation; with a LOT of projects in the fire all the time, I basically forgot bout replacing the parts on the 2-trucker.

THEN, a couple of weeks ago, I noticed THIS at the end of a day of running outdoors :o -



Those darn little retainers (& the tiny Phillips head screws that secure them) had fallen out AGAIN! >:(  (Although at least this time the valve gear didn't jam up).

My normal work schedule makes it a bit difficult to contact Bachmann parts dept.; but on April 18th, I had a vacation day from work, & tried calling parts to get enough of these to restore BOTH Shays back to operation.  When I first called, I was told that your large-scale Shay parts expert (I believe his name was Irv, if I remember correctly) was on another call & would get back to me.  (He did - but when he called me I was 1/2 way through a 33-mile bike ride). :P

I obviously DIDN'T have the part numbers with me while I was out riding - but after about 15 minutes on my cell phone at the side of the bike trail, finally got across to Irv what I needed, & that he'd send them out the following Tuesday (which should have been April 22nd).

They haven't shown up here yet  :-\  (& Massachusetts isn't THAT far from Philly! ;) ).

I'm wondering if you could double-check for me if that order actually went out ???  The part #'s I got off the Shay mechanical drawings were: G811X-0YE01 for the Stephenson link retainers (my term for them)
and SCREW-10635; I had ordered at least a dozen of each, to get both Shays running again & give me a few "spares". ;)                Tom

Large / Improved wiring for the 3-truck Shay

 I've LOVED the pulling power of my Bachmann 3-Truck Shay!

-but HATED  that miserably-fragile that miserably-fragile loco-tender wiring harness from almost "Day 1"!

-Within a week of when I got it, one of the wires going from the loco to the tender connector broke loose from it's header pin.  I had (VERY carefully!) removed the tiny female pin from the header, pulled a little extra "slack" out from the Bachmann printed-circuit board in the loco , & resoldered it.

-For several months, all was OK, until I went to use the 3-trucker for snow-plowing this past winter; bringing it out from the house, I found that SAME wire broken again, & 2 others ready to let go as well!

-At that point, I decided I'd had it with the original header, & decided to see if I could come up with something more reliable, since I have to disconnect the loco & tender to carry them out to garden railroad or back into the house.

-I did have a few "specs" I wanted the new connector to meet:
-easy to insert & remove...
-gold-plated contacts for reliable connections...
-solid "clamping" of the cable jacket (to prevent MORE broken wires!)...
-readily available & inexpensive

Here's what I came up with - conventional modular telephone plugs & jacks!







The new wires were soldered directly to the Bachmann PCB in the fuel bunker section of the loco...



And since the white jacket on the wires didn't look too realistic, I got busy with a black "Marks-A-Lot" marker...









I ran it outdoors last weekend; no problems, & now it's EASY to separate the loco & tender!  We'll see how well it holds up long term (has to be better than that original header)! ;)  (Hint, hint, Bach-man!)

Mr. Bach-man, can I look forward to see you at the Amhearst Railway Society's train show in Springfield, MA on Jan. 26 & 27?  Like to have a look at some of the new products! ;)

Also, it's looking at the moment that I may not  :-[ be able to make the ECLSTS this year due to work commitments; will Bachmann be displaying at the York TCA spring meet? ???  (Might be able to make the TCA meet, just re-joined last year! :)).

Large / My "catch" at ECLSTS

I know Mr Bach-man saw me walking out of of the dealer hall at the East Coast Large Scale Train Show with a large "Spectrum" box. ;)  Here's what was in it....







Also at ECLSTS, I picked up one of Phoenix's new P5 sound cards.  Since my "Watuppa Railway" doesn't have much in sound-equipped passenger power (other the the basic "chuffer" board in an "Annie"), I decided the new Mogul was going to get the P5 installed...





As a result, it has a few additions not normally found on 19th-century Baldwins! :)

In the engineer's-side toolbox on the front of the tender, I installed the P5's volume "up-down" switch...



(Did I mention - this thing is LOUD!!!) :o 8)

- but what's hiding back here ???



- 9600 baud computer serial interface jack  ;D for programming the P5!

I also installed a Digitrax DG583S DCC decoder in the boiler; she runs as good as she looks! ;)

Here's a VERY EASY way to get a bit more sound out of the new Bachmann DCC-&-Sound-On-Board 3-Truck Shay!

First, remove the tender tank from the 3rd-truck tender frame; remove the 2 small Phillips screws underneath the bottom rear of the tank, & slide the tank slightly forward on the frame to release the two latches at the front of the tank; CAREFULLY lift the tank off the frame, being careful not to over-stress & break the wires going to the back-up light.

All that's inside the tank are the speaker for the Tsunami system, a pair of weights, & the PC board that the "female" header wiring harness connector mounts to.  Find a suitable plastic cup to fit over the speaker (& still clear the top of the tender tank when it's re-installed! ;)); hot-glue the cup OVER & FULLY AROUND the speaker!  (You might also want to put a bit of hot glue over the "header" wires as well as "stress relief", along the lines of TOC's suggestion for the "Procedure").










Re-assemble the tender tank to the frame; while it still doesn't bring the Tsunami sound output level up to that of a Phoenix 2K2 board, I'd say it made something like a 3 db. improvement in the volume level! :)

"Cost" was raiding the girlfriend's accumulation of assorted plastic cups! :D ;)  (I think it may at one time have held tartar source from a "fish-&-chips" dinner! ;)).                 Tom
