Large / Using Bachmann couplers on other makers trucks
February 03, 2016, 10:46:41 AM
There has been some discussion of adapting Bachmann knuckle couplers to other manufacturers trucks.  This is what I have done.

I drill a hole in the truck tongue right behind the coupler shank and infront of the axle.  I then screw in a "small screw eye" that I got at ACE, part number 76454.  This is a USAt Arch Bar truck.

Insert the plastic rod into the eye and then attach the coupler to the truck tongue.  The plastic rod does rub against the axle, but it doesn't seem to be a problem.  If you cut it off between the eye and the axle, the remaining stub may fall out of the eye on a tight curve.

I think that you could insert the eye between the mounting screw and the end of the coupler shank, this would permit you to be able to cut off some of the plastic rod and still keep it in the eye.

The other day I was having a problem keeping a string of three Bachmann Spectrum Tank cars on the track.  My curves are all Aristocraft 10' diameter.  They kept derailing going into a curve.

I took one off the track to examine it and discovered that the coupler would not swing from side to side in the coupler pocket.  Further investigation showed a small "U" shaped clip on top of the coupler shank between the car body and the back of the knuckle.  When I removed the clip from the cars, I had no further problems.

I notice a similar clip on my D&RGW long caboose.  I haven't had any problems with the caboose staying on the track. The clip is not on my box cars.

My first question is what is the purpose of those clips?

My second question in the box with the car, was a small bag with items to be attached.  Unfortunately, there were no directions or illustrations showing where to put them on the car, where do they go?

Yardmaster, Mr. Bachmann:

Of late there have been a number of posts for things other than trains: medications, term papers, etc.  Does it help you if we call them to your attention, or are you likely to find them without any help from us.

This morning some one posted an ad in one of the threads.

Usually they just fill up a page with 15-20 different topics.

This morning I saw a questionable, not train related, post.  I thought about questioning it, but didn't.  I hoped that you guys would take care it.  You did, THANK YOU.
