HO / Parts for Old HO Scale GP 40 (Kader 8302)
May 03, 2017, 09:22:19 AM
And now for the rest of the story...

I got the old GP-40 (Kader 8302) running great by cleaning the motor thoroughly and lubricating the motor, gears and cleaning the wheels. However, I was never able to find those replacement, large axel, non-geared wheels for the non-motorized truck. I bought another Bachman 866 on eBay, to use for parts, in the hope I could get those large axel wheels that way. There seems to be several generations of the Bachmann 866, and the one I bought on eBay had a smaller diameter axel on the non-motorized truck.

What I decided to do was focus on the 866 I got on eBay and use the older 866 (Kader 8302) for parts, which I didn't really need to do, the older 866 still runs great on DC, except for the wobbly rear truck, and got the newer 866 running even better than the older.

I converted the 866 GP-40 to DCC and installed LEDs including ditch lights. Installed a TCS WOW101-KA and repaired some areas of the shell and have the 866 looking and running beautifully.

I hope to go back to the older 866 (Kader 8302) and give it some more TLC if I can ever find those large axel, non-geared rear wheels.
In the mean time, I bought a new Bachmann 906, GP-40 with DCC and sound and love it also.

I plan on posting a pic of the refurbished 866 converted to DCC on this thread soon.

HO / Bachmann DCC Turnouts & Crossovers
May 03, 2017, 08:52:10 AM
Bachmann's product description for the DCC EZ Track turnouts and crossovers state that they are compatible with all NMRA-compliant DCC systems with easy installation and programming. I'm moving beyond EZ-Command given it's limitations in being able to communicate with a PC and JMRI. I've begun using a simple system called DCC++ along with JMRI to run my layout and program my DCC decoders and this system works beautifully.

One issue I'm having is getting JMRI to communicate with the Bachmann turnouts. They come with a preprogrammed address of 3 and I can still control and reprogram the turnouts with EZ-Command, but not with the NMRA compliant DCC++ Base Station and JMRI.

JMRI doesn't seem to be able to communicate with the Bachmann turnouts no matter what address I type in. I know, in theory, you should be able to push in the button on the turnout, then it toggles twice, and then you should be able send it the new address but the Bachmann turnout doesn't seem to be listening to the JMRI commands.

When the EZ-Command controller sends a message to the turnout, with an address of 3 for example, what command or number is it really sending?

How can I get the turnouts to respond to JMRI?

Please advise.

General Discussion / EZ Command & JMRI
December 26, 2016, 09:18:08 AM
It should not be a stretch that since PC/Laptops and the EZ Command DCC control station both have an ethernet port that EZ Command could communicate with JMRI.

Any chance there could be some progress in that area?
I understand that Lenz makes the EZ Command for Bachmann and Lenz already interfaces with JMRI.
