General Discussion / DCC install .... remove capacitor ?
November 15, 2017, 11:43:40 PM
A while back I installed a DCC decoder in a Baldwin RF 16 (it was a NCE Bach DSL decoder).  The instructions called for two capacitors to be cut out of the existing engine before installing the chip (everything worked fine).  I am now trying to install a soundtraxx TSU - 1000 decoder and I was wondering is this removal of the stock capacitor something that is done always no matter what brand decoder is being installed?  In other words is this something I am going to have to do again.  It is going in to another RF 16 just like the first engine its just that this time around I want to add sound thus the TSU - 1000.  It is one of those things that the Bach DSL chip came with instructions specifically for Bachman engines which made it easy ... I don't know if the soundtraxx decoder will have similar instructions considering they make it with use on all different kinds of makes and models.

thanks

Curious as to wether or not auxiliary lights such as ditch lights are lumped in to the regular lights when installing a 9 pin (non wired) decorder.  In other words if I buy a decoder, am I going to be able to individually turn on and off ditch lights by utilizing the 9 pin connection or am I going to have to wire connect it if I want that functionality.  I have an engine that I can control the rear light on but that is because I removed the light board and soldered the wires to a new board style Bach dsl decoder.  I'm hoping to not have to do this and rather just use the 9 pin.

General Discussion / Running dcc engine on dc
November 07, 2017, 09:41:53 AM
Hello,

I have two trains with soundtraxx decoders (Bachmann engines that came with) I tried running them at my brothers house because I am making a dc layout for my niece, they would not run.  I am aware that they may need to have a CV ADJUSTMENT (I think it is cv 28) but my specific question is :

When I apply dc power (16-19 volts) the lights start blinking uniformly.  Is this a default alert of some kind to the user that they are not configured for dc or is it some kind of high voltage protection safety?

Thank you

HO / spectrum cv values

does anyone know why spectrum engines don't have CV's 5 and 6 ?

HO / wire gauges
August 04, 2016, 09:27:48 PM
I have a 4 x 8 DCC layout composed of EZ track.  I am getting ready to get rid of the terminal re-railers and solder feeders from each piece (or maybe every 3rd or fourth piece) of track.

my question is as follows:

can i use 22 gauge for the feeders and 16 gauge for the bus? feeders will only be 9 inches long max each and bus wire will be approximately 30 feet long along the track in total.

the 12 gauge from the NMRA standard for the bus , or it might have even been 10, seems over kill IMO

thanks

HO / Chip for rf-16 shark nose
July 21, 2016, 03:06:51 PM
I have a Bachmann rf-16 shark nose and I want to replace the decoder with a more responsive one / better quality than what is in it stock .... Any suggestions ?  I want to be able to speed match it with one of my other two engines which have sound value and tsunami chips ... It is missing the mid range cv and a few other CV's that I think I would need to make it be able to run with said other engines

HO / Dcc b units

Do dcc B units just provide more pulling power if they are speed matched with an A unit ?  Such as in real life ?

HO / where to place feeder on turnout
June 12, 2016, 07:48:53 PM
I want to run feeders to my turn outs to (i'm actually running them to other parts of my track so as to not rely on the rerailer terminal plugs anymore) but I do not know the best points to provide power.  for my regular pieces of track I just drill a small hole to each rail right before where the snap track snaps together to join to the next piece.  I am using bachmann turnouts, snap track, DCC friendly (kind with the powered twin coil motors)

HO / 18" radius vs 22"
January 27, 2016, 12:17:38 PM
I have a track set up which utilizes 18 " curves throughout (both at the end half circles and at points of curve through the mainline straightaways).  I used the layout that is shown in the "my first EZ track" Bachmann track package (you can easily find the image if you type that in the Internet).

My question is if I offset the original layout with 22" curves, will I need to purchase additional half length of straight track to make up differences in the curves that connect the straightaways.  I realize that the half circles will match properly, but when I look at the intermittent curves throughout it seems like the larger radius may leave gaps.

General Discussion / Where to buy switches
December 29, 2015, 06:53:05 PM
I need I believe a single pole double throw switch for switching my Bachmann turnouts with 16 volt ac.  I don't know where folks find switches for this type of thing.  Ideally instead of soldering the perfect switch would have screw down connection.

I forgot the switch has to be momentary.

HO / How to oil Bachman motor bearing
December 26, 2015, 07:18:15 PM
I have a Bachmann Santa Fe f7 dcc sound value engine.  I am trying to lubricate the motor bearing because it is making a Nast winding sound.  I took the shell off but I don't see any access to the motor.  What else needs to be removed to have access for oiling ? Do I really have to remove the circuit board ? Do I have to remove the wheel carriages ?

HO / Dynamis power issues
December 25, 2015, 10:50:41 PM
I am using Bachmann dynamis with EZ track.  When you hit the stop button on the command station controller power is cut and your trains stop to avoid collisions etc.  it has functioned fine, but now when stop is pushed everything stops but control to the track is permanently lost and the only way to fix it is by removing and replacing the track wires or powering off an on the entire command station.  I have systematically tried to understand why this is happening but I cannot.   :-\  if anybody has any ideas I would appreciate

HO / Dcc and CV 3 & 4
December 02, 2015, 12:49:53 PM
Could someone please explain what CV's 3 and 4 do ? As I understand cv's 2,6&5 set start mid and max voltage respectively .... Cv 29 allows said parameters to be divided in to 28 steps .... How does cv 3 and cv 4 fit in to all of this?

Thanks

HO / Locomotive Performance
November 19, 2015, 03:21:20 PM
I have two Bachmann locomotives both are new but I assume they have been sitting in their boxes (new as in never opened) both dcc.  They both run one way better than the other (the more expensive one) but I get the feeling like they may need lubrication.  I see a lot of people on videos running their engines on speed 1 of their controller just crawling real slow and smooth.... The one engine will not move forward until about speed 6 .... Could this be a possibility and if so .... I only saw pictures for lubricating a 2-8-0 in the read only FAQ forum.

Thanks

General Discussion / Screw in dynamis power out
November 19, 2015, 12:29:51 PM
I have Bachmann dynamis with an ho EZ track layout.  I want to run two more terminal rerailers to add power to the existing single rerailer.  I have read previous posts about splicing wires from one rerailer to the next etc etc .... My question is .... Instead or splicing wires, can I just run my 10 foot extensions back to the control and plug multiple sets of wires in to the optional screw in adapter at the power to track out (obviously not the 3.5 mm outlet )

Thanks
