General Discussion / Lube Question
January 23, 2017, 12:10:03 PM
I have a Bachmann F7 A diesel that I have noticed, when I service it,there has been what I would describe as copper anti- seize around where the axle rides in the truck. I thought it might have been some wear off of the contacts and didn't think anything about it. Today, when I was cleaning and lubing it,I took a really close look and found that the axle was actually wearing down where it rides in the truck. The metal is worn, not the plastic truck. I use Labelle 102 on the axle where it rides in the truck and today after cleaning I used 106 grease. I run my trains sometimes for 5 hours in a day and sometimes they don't run for a week. I have been servicing them about once a month or sooner. They are all about a year old. Am I using the wrong lube ? Not servicing them frequently enough ? Or is this something that wears out normally. If I run them that much,do I need to buy replacement trucks in bulk ?

HO / Need professional advice update
March 11, 2016, 08:34:16 AM
I received the new decoder boards yesterday and installed them. Everything is working fine, both of the GP7s run good in a consist and was able to reverse the forward direction in one to run long hood forward. I installed one in the GP 38-2 and had no problems changing the address to 1. Happy with how everything turned out,no more hum while they are running. Now I need to work on the old Atlas turnouts to keep them from shorting out when switching tracks. Was thinking of grinding the track where they short out and use something like JB Weld to make new track where I grind it out.

HO / Static Electricity

Don't know if this subject has ever come up here, but this is something to think about when servicing your locomotives with DCC. For all who don't know, you can cook the decoder if your body has a built up charge strong enough and you happen to touch the contacts on the board. The dry winter weather is a problem when working with sensitive electronic components. I read a lot of posts of new to DCC and thought I would give some advice for those that would have never thought of something like that happening. Touch something metal that's grounded to discharge the build up.

HO / Need some professional advice
February 18, 2016, 08:46:40 AM
I have 2 DCC GP7 HO locos, one with sound and one without. The one without sound has the "transformer hum" and does not have very good low speed operation,to which I have found out is normal. When I have them both connected together the one with sound,at low speed where I run them, just drags the other with it,I can hear the wheels slipping. I had sent the one without sound back to Bachmann to have repaired and was told there is nothing wrong with it. Through some research I have found PC boards that are replacement for the ones in them that are "quiet running and have better low speed operation" Now my question,if I change the board in the one without sound will it fix my problem and will they run a little more equally?
