Large / 2-6-0/4-4-0 Axle & Gear Availability
April 05, 2024, 02:39:26 PM
Mr Bach-man/Administrator,
The axle with gear has been out of stock for months. There are still lots of 4-4-0s and 2-6-0s that need a replacement.
Model: 813XX-13:

And I notice you sell just the gear - some poor guy tried to fit it on the old knurled axle. I don't think we have any of the new "D" gears failing yet, so no-one has an axle with a flat for the new gears. Suggest you delete this:

I assume the original thread has been locked by the "Yardmaster" as it doesn't let me reply [what happened to the Bach-man?]

I just wanted to confirm/correct Mickey's post.
QuoteI assume you are talking about the gear that they have had a "D" replacement available for years and is not that expensive.

Will this work from the 2-8-0?  I thought I read at one time that they were all the same?  No?

Product ID 4833, the one labelled 'for 4-4-0 and 2-6-0' is the correct part. I have installed quite a few of them, and if you look around you will find Loco Bill's thread on how to do it, with a link to my photos.

The 2-8-0 axle [products_id=10285] will NOT work, as it is extended to reach through the outside frames to the counter weights.

Large / Consolidation 2-8-0 crank needed
June 28, 2021, 04:15:11 PM
I have a 2-8-0 which has a broken crank on the drive axle. Panic over - I found one on a loco converted to stephenson's valve gear.

Large / Industrial 2-6-0 tender wiring
June 28, 2021, 04:13:49 PM
Hi all,
I have acquired a tender from an Indie 2-6-0, which claims to be a Spectrum. It has 2 plugs - one 2-pin and a 4-pin.  There is no wiring diagram on the Parts listing. Anyone know what the wires do?

Large / Railtruck Rear Axle Gear fix
January 27, 2021, 09:26:05 AM
First let me say I have not found an easy fix. The axle is very complicated and I used a wheel puller and a gear puller, not tools in the average persons kit.

I started woth some bevel gears I found at Aliexpress.

The gear had to be lightly sanded and the width reduced. Then I drilled it out 3mm and filed the holet to an oblong shape as both axle and driveshaft have flats and are 3.2mm diameter.

The gear puller took the gear off the driveshaft:

The wheel puller was used to get the wheel off. NOTE that there is a tiny bolt in the end of the axle that must be removed, the hub taken off, and then the bolt must be replaced tightly into the axle as it takes all the strain of the wheel puller.

There's a full essay with lots more photos here:

Large / Circus Anniversary 4-6-0?
December 22, 2020, 03:46:49 PM
I've just been helping a friend set up a double-headed circus train with a pair of Emmett Kelly 4-6-0s. One was conventional (apart from all the xmas lights someone had fitted around the front which we had to rip out.) The other seems to be a 5th Gen Anniversary chassis [metal rods, crossheads, bump over gear and grease access.]
What's most curious is that it has some metal fittings - metal whistle on the steam dome, for example. It also has a BBT-style pilot mount.

I don't believe there ever were any Circus locos with Anniversary designations? Or were there?

Oh - the double header works. Revolution and battery in the rear tender, wired to the two engines in parallel.

I am looking for a spare Kader 881 motor , the double-ended can type used in the latest locos - says 881 on the plastic brush carrier end. I got one from the estore intended for the GP50, but I assume the motor is used on several other locos?

It appears to have been used in most of the diesels - all the GPxx, and several more types.

Anyone got an old one lying around that I can use?

Large / Spectrum 4-4-0 valve rod
October 07, 2019, 12:01:29 PM
I have a 4-4-0 and, while reassembling it after fixing the gears [see other threads] I discovered my valve rod rocker is disconnected from the valve gear slider.  Photo attached.

From the parts diagram, the pin should come out of the rocker arm, so I could twist it back into the rocker.  However, it doesn't want to turn or come out.

Anyone ever deal with this problem?

Large / Axle Gear for Spectrum 4-4-0 and 2-6-0, New Part
September 02, 2019, 10:16:23 AM
My 4-4-0 recently coasted to a halt so I suspected the axle gear had cracked.  (It hadn't - that's another thread about different gears breaking.)  I ordered a new one from Parts and got this:

It's clear the NWSL gear won't fit on this axle, though it should fit on the original axle.  What isn't clear is whether they updated the material so this gear won't crack?

Large / Spectrum 4-4-0 different gear problem
August 21, 2019, 03:52:11 PM
I have a 1:20.3 spectrum 4-4-0 and it stopped moving - cracked axle gear, I thought.  (I already replaced one on my 2-6-0.)  So I ordered the axle from Parts and got on with the surgery.
Imagine my surprise when I realized it wasn't the axle - it was the first gear pair and the spur on the worm was completely worn away!

Anyone know where I can get a replacement?  The whole motor/gearbox pair is available, but for $50.40.  The gear looks just like the one on the axle, but different shaft and the extra spur attached to it.  Guess I could pin the axle gear to the smaller spur gear and use some brass tube in the hole. . .
