HO / Spectrum 2-8-0 tender body removal
June 08, 2020, 10:43:25 PM
It's been a while since I last did this but how do you remove the tender body from the Spectrun (remember those good models?) tender.

Thanks.

HO / FA-2 truck disassembly
May 10, 2020, 02:49:08 PM
Not sure is a gear as cracked or what but I need to access the wheels on an FA-2.  Google was no help.   Anyone tell me how to access the wheels on the truck?

Loco was fine yesterday but tiday one wheel set is cranky.

Thanks.

HO / spectrum 2-8-0
October 26, 2019, 10:43:55 PM
i sent one of my Spectrum 2-8-0s away for a sound decoder installation.

It came back with both pilot and tender couplers missing and one of the pilot wheel journals broken so the pilot truck axle is only held in place by one journal.

Can Bachmann couplers and and now pilot truck be ordered from Bachmann?

HO / HO sound decoders.

Does Bachmann sell their HO diesel and steam sound decoders as separate, user install items?

HO / Spectrum 2-10-0 - Comments

What do people think of the Spectrum 2-10-0?

Sound or DC, doesn't matter which.

Any known issues?

HO / Sound Value 2-6-0
June 19, 2018, 03:25:42 PM
Managed to get one of my two running after the decodered let the smoke out.

Simply swapped tender chassis from the one where the valve gear fell apart.  That one is on its way back to Bachmann.

I'm impressed with the 2-6-0.  While not as detailed as a Spectrum model it looks good and has great pulling power.  Mine regularly pulls 10 - 13 cars plus Van (Caboose) on the branch (To staging) freight with no issues.  Could probably pull more but waybill for the branch max out at around 13.  The sound system is good enough for me as I run with my sound levels quite low, just audible from four or so feet away, except for whistle and bell.  I don't both with the gimmicks, Fireman Fred, water tank filling, coupler clash etc., so inexpensive decoders, like the ones in Bachmann engines, work fine for me.

As many people know, given the numerous posts here about issue with the 2-10-0, it has problems.  My three 2-10-0s come no where near close both in smooth operation and in pulling power which is sad, as they were purchased for use on the branch freight while the 2-6-0s were purchased for use on the two to three car branch passenger.

Cheers.

HO / Bachmann 4-6-0, versions.
June 08, 2018, 09:13:28 PM
The Bachmann 4-6-0, both the passenger and freight versions are nice models but a bit dated for my 1959 GER.  I can update them by changing the steam dome and sandbox and move the headlight, modify the cab and tender etc..   However, what I would like to do on both versions is to change the slide valves cylinders to piston valve cylinders as it's very unlikely a class one road would not have done this by the late 1930s.

Can anyone point me to a website somewhere that shows how this has been done?  It doesn't have to be the 4-6-0s just a loco with the cylinders being modified.

Thanks/

HO / 2-10-0s. Again.
June 04, 2018, 10:25:38 PM
These engines seems to have had a lot of issues over the years.

One Spectrum of mine the motor turns but the wheels do not.

Next Spectrum, a wire pulled loose from inside the boiler.  As this engine is a pain to take apart, it's currently side tracked.

And now what appears to be a sound value version of the 2-10-0, lacking stand off details etc., the engine runs erratically, hates going through switches where it binds at both the points and the frog.  It has zero pulling power and even on plain track it just stops, while sound keeps on chugging away, hesitates and then maybe crawls for a bit and then speeds up.   If I hold the coupler the wheels do not spin which explains no pulling power.

Suggestions?

Cheers.

HO / 2-6-0 Valve gear motion.
March 18, 2018, 08:28:49 PM
Mr. B.

I have a Sound Value 2-6-0 where the valve motion has come loose.  This is the second one where it's happened.

The Loco is now a few years old so is out of warranty.   What processdo I have to go through to send it back for repair/replacement and how much will is cost?

In addition, the locomotive and tender have been weathered and extra details added.  In the past, Bachmann have simple replaced locos sent in under warranty even though I have requested the same loco back as all my Spectrum steam locos have extra details added and have been custom painted and decalled for my home road.

As both the 2-6-0 boiler and cab assemble have been weathered and details and the tender has also been modified, decalled and weathered, is it possible to just send in the damaged locomotive's running gear.  Motor chassis etc.?

Thanks in advance.

HO / Doodlebug Programming
February 12, 2018, 01:28:07 AM
I am trying to put into service a Doodlebug I purchased several years ago.

It has the Bachmann four function decoder installed for now.

I am programming using JMRI, which is usually very simple however.

When using the long address so I can allocate the decoder units number, 9000, it always defaults to the DCC 3 address.

The lunit, as it comes from the factory is set so that forward is reverse and reverse is forward.

Using JMRI I set the program so that the motor control is reversed.  Doesn't work.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

HO / Adding extra tender pick-ups
January 14, 2018, 01:36:33 AM
Bachmann tenders only pick up power on two wheels on each truck.  This can lead to poor pick-up going through switches, diamonds etc..

Has anyone added picks up to the insulated wheels so all wheels on the tenders pick up power?

If so, how?

Thanks.

HO / Alco 2-6-0 - Accessing tender.
January 12, 2018, 12:57:22 AM
One of my Alco 2-6-0s has been damaged and I want to remove the sound decoder and place it in another tender.  How do I remove the tender body.  Searched on line with no luck but I'm sure there's a drawing somewhere showing how the loco and tender are assembled, I can't find it.  :-(

Thanks.

General Discussion / Mr. B - Replacement decoders.
January 08, 2018, 07:58:52 PM
Mr. B.

Is it possible to purchase replacement sound decoders directly from Bachmann?

I toasted the decoder in one of my HO 2-6-0s.   I am reluctant to send the loco to Bachmann for repair as past experience has shown the service department do not send the same loco back, even if you ask for the same loco back.   As all my locos have extra details added, details replaced or relocated and are painted and weathered I'd really like loco the same loco back.

However, as an alternative I could just send back the tender chassis and have that replaced, if that is possible?

Thanks in advance.

HO / Alco 2-60 DCC pick up isuues.
January 08, 2018, 03:59:42 PM
I have just put one of my 2-6-0s into service and find, compared to other steam I have, that it's very track sensitive.

While other steam roll through my Atlas  Code 83 switches and diamonds with no problems, the 2-6-0 is very fussy.

Any hints, suggestions?

Cheers.

General Discussion / Photobucket

Now that Photobucket as decided to be difficult and charge all users a fee and if you do not pay the fee it seems you cannot upload files from Photobucket, what do people here plan on doing here to post photos?

HO / 2-6-0 Valve gear motion.
June 18, 2017, 09:00:04 PM
For the second time in around three years, the motion locking nut that holds the crank drive rod and the motion crank on one of my 2-6-0s has gone missing.

Last time this happened, I sent a fully detailed and custom painted and weather loco back to Bachmann for repair clearly stating I wanted my locomotive back and not simply a replacement from stock.

I got back a stock locomotive!  I asked what happened to my detailed loco and could I have it returned so I could swap bodies but never heard back.

Mr. B.  Is it possible to get a custom detailed and painted loco back from your service department or is it standard procedure just to take a model from inventory and send that back?   I am really reluctant to send my loco in for repairs.

Cheers.

Mr. B.

There are many posts on this board that offer good advice and help.

It would be nice if there was a "Like" button, as Facebook has, so you can click the like button rather than cluttering up the board with "good idea" posts or, as in most cases, doing nothing.

Cheers
