On30 / Locomotive refuses to run
February 10, 2019, 02:37:35 PM
I'm not going to tell you guys what kind of locomotive because it's irrelevant to the case.
Here is what happened.
I had to repair and rewire the locomotive because of wire length problems.
The OEM sound decoder also had died so i used a standard 2 function Bachmann decoder as stand in.
I programmed it with JMRI and a Sprog3 using adress 3 and ran it on my big layout using my Lenz equipment.
Everything works fine ,ran for several hours without any hick ups.
I gave it back to the owner who also uses Lenz equipment.
Nothing...dead as the proverbial doornail.
Ok , something could have happened during transportation.
Got it back, put in on my track......works perfectly.
Shoot me and my friend , we are at a total loss, what is happening here?
Btw he took it back home and it still refuses to budge.

On30 / Colour 18' boxcars
September 17, 2017, 03:27:31 PM
When you look in the shop there are two distinct colours for the 18' boxcars , oxide red and ..wait for it...oxide red.
One is brown and the other one is more redbrown.
Are there paint numbers available for these colours?
And then i don't mean colour discriptions but real colour numbers.

General Discussion / screw type on30 rail bus.
March 22, 2017, 06:10:44 PM
I have a lot of screws left over from my box full of dead railbus chassis.
What is the type?
I measure 1.33 mm or 0.052 inch.
I have a metric/Whitworth feeler gauge but because of the size of the screws in can't see what i am doing.
I'm only familiar with metric.
Does anybody know what type of screw i am looking at?

I get the impression, frequenting this forum, that a lot of beginners don't have a clue what DCC is and what the difference is between DC and DCC.
Here is an attempt.

The difference between DC and DCC the simple way.

First DC.
The controller produces a voltage between 0 and lets say 12V Direct Current.
When turning the control knob you give the motor of the locomotive an increasing amount of electrons causing the motor to turn faster and faster.
When turning the knob the other way the locomotive will go slower and stop in the end.
Some controllers have a knob that turn to the right and to the left of a zero point.
There are others that have a toggle switch.
Both change the polarity of the controller from +/- to -/+ causing the locomotive to run the other way.
There are also controllers that simulate acceleration and deceleration.
But that's a different story
Simple so far?

Now to DCC.
Better known as Digital Command and Control.
A controller with DCC will send a digital signal comprised off 1's and 0's ( on or off's) also known as binary to a receiver on the locomotive.
The receiver/decoder in the locomotive will convert these into understandable commands.
The carrier with DCC commands looks like AC, not DC.
Every locomotive on track has a specific name or address.
Every signal send from the controller first sends that address and then the information what the locomotive has to do.
So only the locomotive with the right address will react.
An advantage of DCC in comparison with DC is that you can run several locomotives on one track completely independent of each other.
For example; If you want an head on collision, not recommanded but no problem.
You can also program the decoder specifically for that locomotive.

This is what I understand DC is with an extra C.

I hope this is simple enough explanation for anyone who wants to start with DCC.

On30 / dissasembling a locomotive
January 15, 2017, 05:06:58 AM
I am trying to disassemble a 2-6-6-2 for painting.
Screws and the way how to take the large parts apart is no problem but can anyone tell what kind of glue was used?
Es specially on the boiler.
My guess is super glue.
If so, i have a mayor problem getting the parts of in one piece.

On30 / 2-4-4-2 wiring problems
October 15, 2013, 09:16:01 AM
I have two 2-4-4-2's running on my layout.
First one and now the second one had power pickup problems.
It seemes like the two pickup wires, black and red, on the front bogie are to tight.
They go trough two holes on top of the front gearbox and then go down to the two bronze pickups.
On both two locomotives one of the wires just broke off near the pickups.
That means that i had to disassemble the locomotive and the front bogie to get to the soldering points.
I resoldered the wire and after reassembling the bogie i gave the wires some slack. through the holes.
Let's hope it will solve the problem.

On30 / 2-4-4-2 Dynamic Digital Exhaust funtion
February 05, 2013, 06:34:57 AM
Or better stated, the lack of DDE.
I had a word with Soundtraxx and they tell me that because of the split motor/sound decoder it was not possible to incorporate this feature.
The PIC chips in the decoder and the soundboard can't communicate to each other.
Nothing but praise for the model but this is a big minus!

On30 / Porter Tsunami manual
February 10, 2012, 05:26:17 PM
Dear Bachman
I'm looking for the Tsunami manual specific for the Porter.
The CD has a generic manual but does not comply with the porter sound decoder.
Neither the official Soundtraxx Tsunami manual.
There are cv's that are not functional in the P. decoder.
Is there a list, somewhere, with the appropriate CV's for the porter?

On30 / colour scheme 2-6-6-2
August 02, 2011, 04:23:27 AM
Why didn't Bachmann make a 2-6-6-2 with the original Milan olive green and silver colour scheme for the Ingenio Agelina sugarmill?
I know it are lean times for business but it would make an already stunning locomotive even more stunning.

On30 / fireman Fred on strike?
July 01, 2011, 08:20:30 AM
This one is for the bach man or anyone who knows.
I have a 2-6-6-2 with tsunami sound.
What type of decoder is installed? like light steam or medium steam.
and how do i get fireman fred to start his job , at this moment he seames to be on strike!
I tried setting cv 201 to 255 and cv 148 to 128 but no reply.
Or is fred not employed on this decoder?
i have several soundtraxx tsunamies, i installed myself and fred's clones are working their BEEP BEEP of!

On30 / rail truck (goose)
April 29, 2010, 08:23:31 AM
does anyone have problems with running the goose?
I have.
Lately i bought two rail trucks and when driven moderately slow to slow they don't run smooth.
After extensive surgery i discovered that the gearbox is the problem.
The last cog , connecting to the driveshaft, is not uniformly shaped.
two teeth are further appart then the rest.
probably due to the injection mould.
Is this problem known to Bachmann?
And if yes, what is Bachmann going to do about it.
