Quote from: Linzthom on March 09, 2010, 10:09:41 PMWould the Bachman On30 Inside Frame 4-4-0 American tender fit behind a cut down Forney made into an 2-4-0?

 Just thought.

All they would then need to do is make a new cab and cab floor. Now that wouldn't take too much tooling , would it?

The inside frame tender is perfect and looks great behind a cut down Forney. This is the first Forney to 2-4-0 conversion that I did, sold the loco to a guy in Arizona who built a desert diorama for it, with the Forney on a small wood trestle over a dried up river.

It's looking good so far.  :)

It is a commission build, the person who is buying it is very happy with how it looks.

VERY nice!

Thanks, that is praise indeed.

It is not a difficult bash, hardest part was getting the tanks to line up.

Bachmann ON30 2-4-4-2 mechanism, ON30 mogul boiler, Kitbash Brothers cab and cab base.

Steam dome moved and replaced with another mogul sand dome.

Stack from a 2-6-6-2.

Side tanks from the BVLC Backshop Shapeways store. https://www.shapeways.com/product/YEYUJPYJE/on30-2-4-4-2-2-6-6-2-side-tank-addition-kit?optionId=67218205&li=shops

It is a work in progress but I am very happy with it so far.

Doesn't matter, if you measure the voltage on the track you will discover that the multimeter thinks it's AC.

Ton

Wrong. It does matter.

The track power feed from the locomotive to the tender is from the left rail via the left side driving wheels and vice versa for right rail track power. The tender wheel pickups likewise pick up power from both tracks, left side wheels from left side rail and vice versa.

The left rail feeds from both the loco and tender are combined where they are soldered to the DCC motherboard. Same for the right side. This provides track power from both rails to the DCC decoder.

So if you get the track power connection from loco to tender wrong the result will be a short circuit.

So yes it does matter.

If you don't believe me cut off the power cord from a domestic appliance, then strip back some insulation from the cut end of the two power wires. Plug the cable into your household power and touch the bare wires together to see that AC power can be short circuited if you get the connections wrong.

And I already know that DCC track power is AC and I don't need a multimeter to prove that fact.

The two-pin plug is the power pickup from the driving wheels.

Apologies for reviving an old thread but the connector wires on the 2-4-4-2 tender I have are all black.

Did you work out the correct polarities for the 2 pin plug ?

Thanks

Wow, good work, I can't see the cuts to the roof at all and the ones to the sides are hardly noticeable at all.

I use CMK Kits saws to make the cuts. Use the finest blade and drag up and down the grooves between the planks. Micro Mark do the CMK blades.

For filler I use Deluxe Materials Perfect Putty. The Narrow Gauge Modeling Company sell this putty. https://www.narrowgaugemodeling.com/product/ngm-g244/

I put medical tape on the roof, 3M make the stuff but I used a generic brand that came out fine. Once on I sprayed it with rattle can satin black primer. Thet bonds it all well to the plastic and I did try testing it to see if the tape would come off easily, it didn't. There were little stands left that stuck up, rally thin and so hard to cut. I did consider shaving them off but a coat of cheap clearcoat applied with a brush stuck them all down to the roof.

II remember seeing a similar one on ebay once that was so short that the trucks were almost touching!

There were some for sale on Ebay USA recently, they were shortened to seven windows on the sides whereas mine are six windows on the sides. The seller had kept the original trucks but had shortened and rejoined the plastic truss rods which would have limited the swing of the trucks and did look wrong on such short wheelbase cars.

I kept the original archbar trucks that the short caboose had and I had to extend the length of the frame by a small amount.

By using one passenger car and one caboose for each of my coaches it has made them expensive kitbashes but at least there is a good amount of left over parts for other projects.

These would make an easy bash for Bachmann to mass produce. Both donors are still in production but of course new molds would have to be made for the bodies and roofs.

I have sold this set now, I had a lot of interest but the first to commit to buy got them.

Two coaches and a combine on short caboose bases. Scale out to 20 foot six inches between end beams.

HO / 0-6-0 decoder wiring
May 13, 2018, 08:00:29 AM
Hi all

I have been given a decoder from a Bachmann HO 0-6-0 tender locomotive that had factory fitted DCC.

I believe this loco is the same as the 2-6-2 but without the leading and trailing trucks.

I would like to use the decoder but all the seven wires are black !

Does anyone have any idea how to identify which wire goes where ?

I have looked at the product reference details for the model but they are very basic and do not show a decoder, let alone how it is wired.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks !

Well I am not Mr. Bach man but I found this via Google.

Tower Models in the UK show a "New all metal bodied 0-4-0 Side Rod Gas Mechanical Loco" on their website.

Would be interesting if it does happen, will make it harder to kitbash but would run better with the extra weight !

A talented and imaginative ON30conspiracy member put an amazing photoshopped 2-6-2 photo into their photo section. Basically its a cut down 2-6-6-2.

The link might work but if not, go the ON30 conspiracy Yahoo forum and check out the album gresham_media in the Photos section.

I hope I am not breaking any forum rules here, and hope that gresham_media does not mind me sharing his photo with a wider audience.

I would love a 2-4-0 like in the picture above!

Should be easy enough to do by chopping the rear off the Forney, some detail parts and a suitable tender, shortened 2-6-0 tender would look good, or the inside frame tender but I really like the look of the stubby tender.

If you look closely the tender appears to have odd trucks on it !

On30 / Re: 2-4-4-2 wiring problems
November 06, 2013, 10:00:23 AM
I just had a problem with a 2-4-4-2 where the front engine would hardly swing at all. It would move a bit then something was making the side on the inside of the curve rise up.

I had read somewhere that the steam pipe from the boiler to the front truck caused some 2-6-6-2s to derail but even after this was removed the problem still occured.

The pickup wires were not causing it so I took off the drawbar that connects the rear of the front truck to the front of the main chassis.

The problem was that the rear end of this drawbar is square and this was limiting its swing around the rear screw. So I took a file and rounded off the edges - now fixed !

On30 / Undecorated 2-6-0 kit ?
November 02, 2013, 03:14:26 AM
Hi all

First of all a plea to keep this thread on topic.

I had previously posted a suggestion that Bachmann consider marketing an undecorated 2-6-0 in kit form.

What I would like to know is would anyone buy such a kit if Bachmann decided to market it ?

Please just state yes or no, and if yes how many you might buy.
