Thomas & Friends / Small layout plan
March 26, 2015, 03:27:29 PM
Maybe impossible but I'd like to build my grandson a small layout 4'X4'.
I'd like to have 2 circles and be able to switch from one to the other. Will I be able to install enough straight track to take a switch or are switches available with a small enough radius to work in a curve?
Plan examples would be nice.
Thanks

General Discussion / Loco runs in reverse
April 19, 2013, 03:59:06 PM
I recently converted a loco to DCC and all is working well except it now runs the reverse way to the controller. i.e. when the controller is in "Forward" the loco runs backwards.
If I re-solder the red and black wires in the reverse order will that solve the problem?

Any other questions?

Yes.
I am not expecting to but if I have trouble fitting the decoder and speaker in Diesel what rolling stock could I couple to him?

Thank you, I would have missed the Clarabel direction part.

Thomas & Friends / Any order

To have an easy instal I'm about to throw Thomas's DCC sound decoder into one of the girls and permanently couple them together.  Do they run in any particular order i.e. does Annie always run directly behind Thomas or is it Clarabel? I might as well make it prototypical ;D

These days I'm only working on my Grandsons "Thomas" railroad but when I had my own CP CN railroad about 50% of my roster was made up of undecorated motive power. I enjoyed painting, adding the decals and any small detail parts. Many times a manufacturer will bring out a new loco and often only two road numbers buying and decorating locos means you can have as many road numbers as the prototype.

Thanks Ray.
I use Peco too. I will give your method a try before I redesign and rebuild the layout.

General Discussion / Double slip confusion
April 07, 2013, 08:53:17 AM
During the "planning?" of my grandson's Thomas railroad I decided to go with a double slip to get trains from the inner loop to the outer and the reverse. I chose this route because it took less than half the space of two conventional turnouts. Plus the two longest straights on the layout are on opposing grades. This was done to add two features, a tunnel and a grade for helpers to be used.
Trouble is I find the DS confusing and that's before I try to run a loco on both loops simultaneously, I'm thinking an excited 5 year old might get frustrated.
Is there an easy method of remembering which way the switch is thrown as to which way the train will travel or perhaps a method of marking ground throws?
I need to resolve this before I start the scenery as perhaps the grades will have to go. (And that will mean ripping up half the layout :()

I might make it 88 as 08 has just been given to Duck.

General Discussion / Additional/custom sounds
April 04, 2013, 12:51:29 PM
My question is what equipment/software do I need to add additional sounds to my decoders. Where can I find step by step instructions and what's a good source for sounds?
Any and all help appreciated thanks Andy.

I'm using the Digitrax SDH164D sound decoder.
I will have to learn how to down load a more "Thomas" whistle and install it on the decoder.
I am a real newbie to DCC but so far I am happy with it's performance, I don't think it's my imagination that Toby runs smoother on DCC than he did on DC.
My only complaint is with the Digitrax manuals which in my opinion although they appear comprehensive are not very intuitive. I find I'm turning to the internet for the "How to" step by step advice.
I just bought 2 more of these decoders and will attempt to install them in Thomas and Diesel. I will have to add a road number to diesel so my grandson knows which loco to address. Any ideas, preferably 2 digit?

I have just started to convert my grandson's fleet of Thomas locos to DCC/sound. So far I have only finished Toby. I attacked him first because his shape allowed more room for a speaker. Also he is very easy to dismantle as the 2 coupler pocket screws are all that secures the body shell. I might have to cheat with Thomas and Percy as they are so small. I will permanently connect Thomas to Annie or Clarabel and use them to house the decoder and speaker. I could do the same for Percy it's just a matter of deciding who will be his partner.
