Are the sets available first? I pre-ordered the individual engines and cars some time ago for my nephews.

I really want to make sure they have something for Christmas.
Should I cancel that out and replace the order for the sets?

Large / Replacement Bulbs
July 25, 2009, 01:29:55 PM
I'm swapping out the head and rear lamps on a 38 ton Shay with a smaller Ozark oil lamp.
It uses a grain of wheat bulb vertically.

I'm using DCC with the original Bachmann board striped out with the QSI magnum board.

I'm not sure on what bulb to use and what voltage? Anything through Radioshack that is recommended?

Thank You

Large / 3 Truck Shay...Locked? Truck
June 01, 2009, 11:01:16 PM
I picked up my first 3 truck Shay. The 3rd truck is locked. Before I start taking things apart, I want to make sure it was not intended to be locked.

It will not move horizontally.

Thanks

I believe I paid around $25 for the complete axel with the gear.

Greg

Thanks for the reply.
I will check everything over. As far as the chip not set to dc mode.
I thought the chip automatically recognize the current and changes on it's own?
How do I go about manually changing the setting for DC?

I do have the engine up on rollers and using a DC transformer. I will hook up my DCC system.

I'm also getting playback error with the programmer. The programmer is sending the signal, as
the firebox is blinking. Has an error in the return signal. Something is not connected.

I will go over the connections again.

Thanks

Large / Help with QSI install 2-6-6-2
January 15, 2009, 10:59:44 AM
The new updated board that is in the Mallet, is a little different
from the K27. This new board has a direct output for the speakers.

I went and replaced the dummy chip with the QSI Aristo chip. Plugged the speaker
into the QSI chip, not the bachmann board.

When I give it power, I get one short burst of sound, and that is it. I also tried using the speaker out on the board and a secondary QSI chip.

Ummm, is there something that I'm missing? With the K-27... I plugged in the speaker to the QSI chip and intalled on the board and everything was working.

I'm sure it's something easy that I'm overlooking. Any suggestions?

I  ordered the Yellow Pine for the red cab only. I was also surprised to see the white striping, especially on the wheels.

I will take care of the pin striping once I weather the engine.

Large / Re: Mallet Speaker Recommendation
January 07, 2009, 12:43:33 PM
I have a Sierra unit in an Consolidation. The speaker does have a lower profile magnet, but the wattage is on the low end. Since the QSI card is able to produce 3 watts, I'm trying to get the larger speaker in.

If I raise the board to it's maximum height, I'm still unable to get the QSI speaker in. I need to find a speaker under 1.5"

I wonder if I should just use the QSI 2.5"speaker.

I was pleasantly surprised on how much better the Mallet looked compared to the pictures.

Thanks for the reply.

Large / Mallet Speaker Recommendation
January 07, 2009, 01:46:14 AM
Those of you that have installed a sound unit. Can you recommend a 3" speaker for me.

I will be using a QSI aristo chip. I have several QSI HP300S 8 ohm 3" speakers on hand. I have one in a K-27 Tender, in which I had to raise the board to fit.

Looks like I will not be able to do that with the Mallet and there is no clearance for this speaker, which has a large magnet at 1.7".

Any other 3" 8ohm, higher wattage speakers out there with a lower profile. All I have found were 3" but only .5 watts.

Thanks

Thanks for the break down so far.
I should have my replacement geared wheel set next week.

Since I was already going to take things apart, I took off the boiler to get to the gear box. Checked for loose screws and re-lubed. Will put that back together and flip it over for the removal of the cracked gear axel. Let us know how it ends up with the dismantle. Thanks

Funny, I posted about the same gear a few days ago. The gear that attached directly to the axel is split on mine too.

If you still have your receipt, then you can have a warranty service. It though would be easier to call the sales dept and order a gear set, and replace it your self.

Remember that you will have more risk of damage to the locomotive during transit to them and back.

Large / Consolidation Gear Parts #
November 16, 2008, 11:00:32 PM
I have a consolidation with a cracked gear. I can not find my parts diagram to get the parts number. Can someone that has there parts diagram, tell me what the part number is. It is the first Gear, that is visible when you take off the gear cover on the 3rd axel.

It's a bummer. I purchased it earlier in the year, when most online vendors were closing them out. It only had 1 hour of tun time, before it stopped moving. The gear is cracked through and is not grasping the teeth on the axel.

Is this something that I have to order through the service dept?
Barry's rupgrade would be ideal, but is out of my budget at the moment.

Thank You

General Discussion / Re: Los Angles Metrolink Train Wreck.
September 14, 2008, 01:05:23 AM
There are 25 deaths so far and there still pulling from the car. Most of the deaths were from first car, from the engine being forced back into the car. They are still trying to get to the lower level.

Take a look on the internet, you will see the engine went right through half of the first car.

Metrolink has admitted fault. They are looking into that the engineer was texting at the time of the accident and missed the red signal. That's what is currently being reported on the news.
