A while back I installed a DCC decoder in a Baldwin RF 16 (it was a NCE Bach DSL decoder).  The instructions called for two capacitors to be cut out of the existing engine before installing the chip (everything worked fine).  I am now trying to install a soundtraxx TSU - 1000 decoder and I was wondering is this removal of the stock capacitor something that is done always no matter what brand decoder is being installed?  In other words is this something I am going to have to do again.  It is going in to another RF 16 just like the first engine its just that this time around I want to add sound thus the TSU - 1000.  It is one of those things that the Bach DSL chip came with instructions specifically for Bachman engines which made it easy ... I don't know if the soundtraxx decoder will have similar instructions considering they make it with use on all different kinds of makes and models.

well I didn't want to wire it at all I wanted to just plug it in and utilize the dcc ready pins

I may have set 29 to something other than 6 back when I first got them I don't remember ... unfortunately I can't read them I will just have to re program them because my command station doesn't read

Yeah yeah I got some real quick noise/sound.  Thank goodness to the safety feature. 

Most of the decoders I installed had dc operation by default apparently then.  It was only these two factory installed that did this ... thank you !!

Curious as to wether or not auxiliary lights such as ditch lights are lumped in to the regular lights when installing a 9 pin (non wired) decorder.  In other words if I buy a decoder, am I going to be able to individually turn on and off ditch lights by utilizing the 9 pin connection or am I going to have to wire connect it if I want that functionality.  I have an engine that I can control the rear light on but that is because I removed the light board and soldered the wires to a new board style Bach dsl decoder.  I'm hoping to not have to do this and rather just use the 9 pin.

I have two trains with soundtraxx decoders (Bachmann engines that came with) I tried running them at my brothers house because I am making a dc layout for my niece, they would not run.  I am aware that they may need to have a CV ADJUSTMENT (I think it is cv 28) but my specific question is :

When I apply dc power (16-19 volts) the lights start blinking uniformly.  Is this a default alert of some kind to the user that they are not configured for dc or is it some kind of high voltage protection safety?

dutch builder .... maybe if you use the exponential speed table like HUNT was saying you could be able to make larger changes on your controller while not having it speed way up .... if i am correct it seems like the exponential varies the speed in that manner while the logarithmic would make larger speed changes in the low end range of the control while having little change in the mid to high end kind of like what you would want for a switcher since it would be intended to only cruise around at like 4 or 5 miles per hour

that's cool ... the only engine i have that is anywhere near being able to run at scale speed is my F7 diesel.  if all of my engines ran like that one i would be ecstatic.  it crawls like an ant on speed one real close to real life and then for every click it makes a small but noticeable jump in speed throughout the entire 28 steps

thank you for explaining this at least i understand how it works now.  it is kind of tough for what i am trying to do though.  i ended up setting the table to the linear option.

thanks for the replies.  i guess everything has its limitations.  i bought some really nice but cheap drop in decoders to replace the factory decoders on my lower end bachmann engines and they work great with the new decoders but that particular decoder doesn't have forward trim only reverse.  so on one hand i have some with tsunami and they generally run well but do not have CV 5 and 6 and then on the other hand i have some modified engines that now run well because of the mods but they do not have trim so its like .... what engine should i use to match to .... the tsunami engine or my modified engines. 

I guess my consist is working ok but it was tough (i only matched them for slow speeds so far)

Next i have to match a shark nose with a NCE decoder to a shark nose with a standard factory bachmann decoder .... they never come with a cv list in the box which annoys me.

It's really hard to speed match. 

does anyone know why spectrum engines don't have CV's 5 and 6 ?
